To be fair (and this is pretty weak as far as defenses go) the source material of 300 was pretty hollow to begin with, imho. That sets it apart from Watchmen right off the bat. 300, be it graphic novel or film, is all about the kick ass visuals. Now obviously it would have been much better had Snyder managed to infuse 300 with the humanity that I felt Frank Miller's graphic novel lacked, but I believe that it was a faithful, if unambitious, adaptation. I do expect and hope for more from the Watchmen film, and I hope its much more complex source material creates a much greater desire in Snyder to create something amazing and not just settle for a 'decent' adaptation.
I apologize, I didn't mean to sound so dismissive of people's legitimate fears and apprehensions. I know comic fans are constantly burned by Hollywood (though Iron Man and The Dark Knight have hopefully set a more positive trend). It's not the well expressed fears and skepticism I have a problem with so much as the knee jerk 'It's going to FAIL, It's going to FAIL, you'd almost think I WANT it to FAIL' sort of negativity that grinds my gears. Obviously there is nothing wrong with being pessimistic, but sometimes I just want to squee without someone telling me the movie I want to see is going to fail or the comic I'm interested in reading is going to suck.
But then I'm a cockeyed optimist by nature, I leave it to others to be more realistic.
