Oooh, that would have been a truly happy ending indeed. AND it'd have made her more interesting rather than simply being a metaphorical stand-in for his own goodness and light.

But I do like the ending, because as tamburlaine above observed, that's a pretty good way to make a villain. Taken as an origin, I rather like it quite a bit.
