Disregard my last post, all... three of you who read it. It's deleted, gone. Passions overtook me, and while I still knew what I was talking about, it didn't come out right and now it's a mess. So I'll scrap it to start over again later. Or not.

Even still, the point of that post was just to not let anger and bitterness completely overtake you. That's all. No matter who wins, we're gonna have to deal with one half of the country being very, very upset. So yeah, less bitching from everyone concerned, more actually... doing something productive.

Shit. I'm just fucking exhausted at this point. [livejournal.com profile] pokeyburro, I hope my response to your objection made sense. I wouldn't mind further discussing poltics with you on a somewhat more private forum, since I think you and I have much in common.

You're not alone.

Saw it. Yeah, pretty much made sense.

It's funny. [livejournal.com profile] tazira referred to me as the "token conservative". Back with my family in Texas, I'd be "that liberal guy". To myself, I feel like a guy who's seen both sides, and sees where they're both coming from. I sometimes think maybe I -am- biased to the right; after all, I grew up in Texas, and my mom was (and is) devoutly Catholic, etc. etc. But then I just had a phone call with my mom where I had to defend my views on civil rights. :-)

In other words, you and I are both feeling assailed right now, from both sides. It's amazing to me that you're getting to go through this at an early age, and that you're still optimistic about the way things'll turn out. Take it from a guy about half again as old as you are: hang on to that optimism. Get your claws into it and ride it. It's gonna be tough. A roller coaster, except with some long, depressing parts. And yet it's going to serve you well down the road.

I think everyone in our LJ circle, and everyone in the nation in general, shares more in common than the extremists on either side would have us believe.

Here's an example. Many of us feel the two-party system needs some work. The more I think about it, the more I think a different voting system might be the thing. Make it safer for voters to take curtain #3 without having to worry about #2 or #1 winning if they don't support the other one. I'd like to know what ways IRV or Condorcet voting could hurt us, and if it won't, maybe we ought to amend our Constitution to employ it. Probably won't happen by '08, but who knows?

What do y'all think?

The people in this country are too fucking stupid to pull the correct lever in the first place, as demonstrated in the 2000 election. If they're too fucking ignorant to push one button how the fuck are they going to push two or three, in the correct order?

hey heffie,

my acting mentor always said (in regards to not getting cast in a show), "you've got 24 hours to grieve, then you gotta move on." i think we on LJ deserve 24 hours of unabashed bitching, then i agree, we gotta move on. there's nothing more any of us can do other than to keep living the good lives we live and spreading our love and chi to everyone we encounter.
