Yes, apparently Neil Gaiman is teaming with producer Robert Zemek... Zemikissis... erm, the Back to the Future dude and director Roger Avary (co-author of Pulp Fiction, Rules of Attraction) to make a (presumably) live-action film of Beowulf. I didn't see the futuristic adaptation of Beowulf in space played by Christopher Lambert, but I'm just gonna bet that Gaiman's version is going to be better.

Meantime, here's the trailer for Tim Burton's "Corprse Bride." Ahem. Squee.

There's also this one, with our dear old Phantom as Beowulf. It's not exactly wide-release, but I would have thought it would have prevented any new versions in the near future. Not that I'm complaining, mind you; Neil & his crew can do anything he wants, and do it well. I blame/credit Seamus Heaney (and LotR in all its epic-inspiring glory) for the logjam.

That looks like so much fun.

The coolest thing about Tim Burton's scariness is that, for me, he takes the "scary" out of it and makes it just that kind of Victorian beauty and ghastly humor that made me love horror short stories back in High School. When I say takes the "scary" out, I mean that at no time do I feel the thrill of fear, only the thrill of admiration and amusement. "The Exorcist" was especially notable for me in that way.

i heart tim burton!
