Man, what a day I had today. There may be a whole Hefner Monologue here, but we'll see. Meantime, suffice to say, I had an amazing time at the Emm Gryner concert. I'm willing to bet that no one here knows who she is. That was basically the reason why I didn't bother to post an invite up here on LJ to come with me, since I just wasn't sure who else wanted to tag along with me to go to Iota in Arlington (a great club/bar, by the way; this may become a more frequent hangout for me, it's just cool!) to see a relatively obscure Canadian-Asian singer-songstress. You might know her from doing backup vocals for Rob Zombie on one album, as well as the "American Psycho" remix of David Bowie's "Something in the air."

Man, she is so good. I love her original songs, but I also love her covers. In fact, her latest album is another cover album. It's amazing hearing her do, in her very special, different way, songs such as "Deckchairs and Cigarettes," "Dearg Doom," "Bau-Dachong," "Julie Ocean," and Therapy?'s "Nowhere." And oh my God, she took that song "Breathless" by the Corrs, which always struck me as so "Mix 107.3" soft rock, if you know what I mean... she somehow makes it so tender and sad.

I don't know if I'll go into the whole story, but the true highlight of the concert was when she went up for an encore and played her beautiful cover of Nick Cave' "Straight to You." And that she did it especially for me, too. But we'll get to that story if it comes to that.

Tori and Alanis fans may do well to check her out, although in many ways I prefer her to both. Well, especially Alanis. God, I could so become this woman's groupie. Plus, her band is a violinist and a cellist, so yeah, anyone who knows my musical tastes knows that I'm putty in her hands.
