Jan. 4th, 2004 02:16 amAlan Bates has passed away.
Most here will probably remember him as Claudius from Mel Gibson's Hamlet. I regret to say that despite his large body of work I haven't seen too much else of his. He was utterly wasted (as was the rest of the brilliant cast) in Altman's "Gosford Park." Though I haven't seen either film, apparently he was in "The Mothman Prophecies" and "The Sum of All Fears." He's purportedly legendary for performances in "Zorba the Greek," "Georgy Girl," and "Women in Love," and now I must see these films. I regret now more than ever that I missed the two-man Broadway show he did with Frank Langella.
Most importantly to me, he played Bri in the film of "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg."
Do yourself a favor: go to your local video store and see if you track down Joe Egg and/or the film "A Journey Round my Father," which he did with Lawrence Oliver (in a restrained, heartbreaking role). They may be hard to find, but I assure you they are worth it.
We have lost a fine actor, and I don't want his passing to go unnoticed.
