Misc. Thoughts
Jan. 31st, 2005 07:13 pm1.) The Aviator was great. I was really, really happy with it. Just a fine film, I thought. And sure, Leo and Cate looked absolutely NOTHING like their real life counterparts, but that really doesn't matter since the film wasn't intending to be history but rather a good movie. After all, if I recall correctly, Hughes didn't go that nuts 'till years later. I mean, that he went that downhill in one scene to wowing the Congressional hearings a few scenes later, yeah, good story but not realtic, I don't think. From a writing aspect, I was particularly impressed with Katherine Hepburn and Ava Gardner as characters... two very, very well-written characters both. So now I've finally seen one of the five Best Picture nominees. Huzzah!
2.) A nice touch for anyone else who's seen The Aviator: did anyone else notice Rufus Wainwright as the 20's singer? How about his father, Loudon Wainwright III as the 30's singer? Or Martha Wainwright in the 40's? That was a wonderful geek touch that not many will get, and it pleased me mightily. For those who don't know Loudon's music, he was the Mayor of Specter in BIG FISH.
3.) Caffeine withdrawl sucks like a son of a bitch. Who knew?
4.) Misty's never seen a David Lynch film. I plan to recify this. Even though I haven't seen it in years, I'm tempted to buy the DVD of WILD AT HEART, it looks sweet. BLUE VELVET is a great but rather overrated film compared to the best of Lynch (The entireity of TWIN PEAKS and THE STRAIGHT STORY). I'd especially want to save THE STRAIGHT STORY 'till after she's seen some of his other fare, just so you get the full "he directed a Disney G-rated film?!" effect.
5.) I repeat: Hal Jordan was on Justice League. I nearly destroyed Ridgaway's floor with geekgasmy glee.
6.) About 20 pages, more or less plus revisions, until my novel is finished and ready to turn in to my thesis advisor for his suggestions. This draft will include aprox. 3/5ths of my original manuscript, finished about a year and a half ago, and it's a far superior draft at that. Saturday night, under the influence of a certain energy drink I cranked out 12 pages of the best writing I've done in years. My heart was racing. But then again, maybe that was the caffeine. It's actually going to get finished. Now here's hoping it's going to be good.
7.) Classy Two-Face icon. Because I'm like that.
