thehefner: (Bub the Zombie)
Part of it was from my father for my birthday. But the rest of them... the scourge of my existence, the cheap DVDs sections of NYC's Virgin Megastore and Best Buy. Damn them to hell! Curse Richards! So now behold my new movies, ye mighty, and tremble!

AS GOOD AS IT GETS: One of the best anti-date movies ever. A simply wonderful but vicious film.

FACE/OFF: Action with substance. A ridiculous plot with great character development and emotion. And that badass trenchcoat and those guns. Haven't seen this movie in years, but for $9.99, I'm gonna guess it's still good.

SUICIDE KINGS: Though critics are mixed on this, I love this little bit of noir goodness starring Walken, Denis Leary, and the wimpy kid from Rosanne.

DAVID CRONENBERG'S NEW FLESH DOUBLE FEATURE: VIDEODROME and eXistenZ: Cuz nothin' says lovin' like a vagina in James Woods' stomach (and another in the small of Jennifer Jason Leigh's back).

DARK CITY: It was $5.99, the cast is great, and it's one of the few cases where I like it even if it is style over substance. Plus, it's better than MATRIX REVOLUTIONS.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: The original, of course. Unfortunately, it's one of those rare cases where it's much better as a grainy VHS than a clean, remastered DVD. Regardless, it's been absent from my collection for far too long.

AIRPLANE!: Because there are times when this movie is the only thing that will do. You know what I mean.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS: For when I want to cry like a little girl.

SURVIVING THE GAME: It's about five evil big game hunters who hunt human beings for sport. The hunters? John C. McGinley, Charles S. Dutton, F. Murray Abraham, Gary Busey, and Rutger Hauer. The prey? Ice-T. That alone should have you racing to the video store.

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN: Depressing ass movie, but beautiful in its own way. A flop because audiences couldn't accept Steve Martin in a serious role. In this movie, he and Bernadette Peters dance in time alongside a projection of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers... and they keep up with them. Plus, this movie has Christopher Walken as an evil pimp (is there any other kind?) stripping to "Let's Misbehave."

LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION!: One of my favorite plays adapted into a wonderful movie. Eight gay men go on a summer retreat to the country. Funny, sad, and beautiful. Even the substitution of Jason Alexander for cast original Nathan Lane can't deter this greatness of this little story. Plus, John Glover rules as he plays twin brothers.

NARC: One of the greatest cop movies ever made. The movie you should have seen instead of TRAINING DAY. Ray Liotta's Henry Oak defies all conventional morality and definitions of "good" and "bad" cop.

BLUE VELVET: Because too many people have seen stuff like SECRETARY instead of this. And while it may not be my favorite thing David Lynch has done, it's arguably his masterpiece.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD/DAWN OF THE DEAD/DAY OF THE DEAD: Oh yeah. The trilogy.

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD: Companion piece. Masterpiece in its own right. Without it, there would be no 28 DAYS LATER or SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Or even "Brains!" for that matter.

GATTACA: Heart-breakingly beautiful, thanks in part to Michael Nyman's score. This is thinking-person's-Sci-Fi on par (IMO) with the likes of Clarke and Asimov, chock full of rich symbolism and metaphor.

REVENGERS TRAGEDY: Finally got this bad boy in the main. Christopher Eccleston, Eddie Izzard, and Derek Jacobi in modern adaptation of Jacobean play. With Chumbawamba soundtrack and directed by REPO MAN's Alex Cox!!!

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL: Perhaps my second favorite movie of all time. Few films are as perfect as this.

Ahem. So. Movie night, anyone?

BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF is the most beautiful piece of crap I've ever seen.
