For all those Simpsons fans...

That's right, this guy apparently has successfully crossbred tomato and tabacco, to create a real "tamacco" plant. Be interesting to see how this pans out.

Oh, and to those who don't know, the title quotes are spoken by Ralph and Clancy Wiggum upon eating tamacco, so choose your bad impersonations appropriately before reciting out loud.

Strictly, he grafted a tomato plant onto tobacco roots. The Albuquerque Journal calls it "crossing", but "crossing" implies that things are going on at the seed level. There are no tomacco seeds, just one plant using another (similar) plant's roots. If you grew the seeds, you'd get tomatoes.

They do this all the time with fruit trees and grapes, to get the best root stock with the best fruit producer. Some catalogs will sell you fruit trees that grow apples and pears on the same tree using this technique.

The nifty thing is that tobacco produces nicotine in its roots and then transports it to the leaves, so you do end up with addictive tomatoes. It was once tried with cannabis and hops (again, related plants) but cannabis only produces THC in the leaves.

Since tobacco and tomato are both solanacaea, it might be possible to actually cross the two. I wonder if it would work.
