On my way to work, while I was looking for a parking space in Georgetown, I came upon a young woman in a blue hooded Georgetown sweatshirt. I had seen her walk down Prospect street before on a couple other Sundays when I'm driving up and down the town desperately trying to snag a free spot. I knew she was a comic book fan, but I'm not certain how I knew. Maybe she came into the store one day, or maybe I remembered her wearing a Scarlet Witch costume for some reason. But I had seen this girl and said nothing enough times that this time I decide the hell with it. My car parked, I walk up alongside her and we start to talking. I don't seem to pay much thought to the fact that she clearly remembered me as much as I did her.
We talk comics for awhile; she's a Marvel fan without much experience with DC Comics, but that's fine, that's great even, it meant I could introduce her to some good books out there. We talk about New Avengers a bit. I rant about how Brian Michael Bendis is a great writer, but man he desperately needs an editor who isn't afraid of him, who won't let him write an eight-part story that could easily be told in four parts. She laughs, in total agreement. We keep talking comics and having such a great time that I find I'm no longer headed for the comic shop anymore. I'm not going anywhere, I'm just walking and talking with her.
And then I know it's time to go. We stop talking for a moment and just look at one another. I'm about to ask her when I might be able to see her again, but the way she looks at me, the words never come out. She looks at me with the slight nervous smile of someone who can hardly believe that what she's been dreaming about is actually here before her eyes. Both of us content, I lean forward and we kiss.
That's when I wake up. Before I even remember the dream, I think to myself I need to get going if I'm to find a parking space in Georgetown.
I really hoped it was for real this time.
