you can't handle the TRUTHINESS
Apr. 29th, 2006 11:16 pmDid anyone else catch Stephen Colbert's White House Correspondents Dinner speech? Holy shit, he was brilliant and bombed big time. I certainly commend his balls; Leno certainly hasn't been bold enough to make jokes like that in years. But unfortunately, man, your average White House correspondents and politicians really are not the Daily Show/Colbert Report style of humor. Which is to say, my sense of humor. Geek humor. Take Stephen's LOTR Mary Sue fanfic, for example. Of course, I heard similar disparagements about Jon Stewart's Oscar-hosting.
Yeah, both of those remind me why I feel so awkward and uncomfortable around normal people. They just don't get my sense of geek humor, and neither did the vast majority of the folks at the White House Correspondents Dinner. I think he did a brilliant, gutsy job, as comedians should do in such situations (as Bloo just reminded me, it's the clowns who get away with telling the truth. Well, unless they're killed. In which case, not so much. Still funny, though), and I look forward to his next show Monday night to hear how he handles so totally crashing and burning, but never once losing his cool.
