Depeche Mode last night was frickin' awesome. I mean, I firmly believe that these bands should perform no more than five, at the bloody most, new songs in a concert, and that certainly applied here. We didn't get "Everything Counts," "Master and Servant," or "Just Can't Get Enough." All that's kind of a bloody crime.

That said, it was still a totally awesome concert. I found myself really sucked into it and singing along at the top of my lungs, which probably sounded as one might expect but was still mightily fun. For one their encores, they did their oldest song, the 80's-tastic "Photographic." It sounded like a lost level from MEGA MAN 2, but in a huge rock concert. Rock.

Also, Martin Gore's voice has seriously improved. I mean, that's the thing, he's the brilliant writer of all the songs, but he's always gotten shit for the times he actually sings because he's... well, he's not David Gahan. And at that point, let me say that Gahan is a fucking awesome showman. 20 years on and he can still fucking work a crowd like that... amazing.

But Martin Gore, on the other hand, is sorta like the Ringo of Depeche Mode. "Aw, give the poor guy a song every now and again!" And I'm of the minority that actually likes his singing voice, but yeah, he's not David Gahan. But his singing here has really improved, it's quite amazing.

Still, he's a guitarist and a writer, NOT a showman. When he actually had his hands free, he didn't quite know what to do with them, making sorta rapper gestures. And when he held his hands out to the crowd, it was less awesome and more... well... *adorable*. It's like watching a puppy with eye glitter in a rock solo.

Too much new stuff and not enough of the really old stuff, but still an awesome concert. A couple of those encore tracks in particular were so good I may just have to buy the concert CD, as long as they're not charging, like, 30 bucks for it.

And yet, half the time, all I could think of was the Monarch from VENTURE BROS saying: "Oh come on! He's the guy from Dee-pesh Mow-ed!"

I just heard about this band called The Protomen.

They do songs purely about Megaman games. Not covers of the music, mind you, these are songs they've written.

You know you want it.
