The Studio Theatre just announced its Fall semester of classes, so I'm gonna apply for "Principles of Realism," I think. It's being taught by Serge, one of the Unholy Trifecta of Studio, a total prick but I kinda like him regardless. It could prove to be an interestingly masochistic class, and in any case, I think I really need it. Anyone know anything about the other teachers, Carol Arthur or Kate Debelack (was she in FAT PIG? If so, she was damn good).
Still, $495 is a goodly amount. I'll see what I can get from Dad, although while he was willing to pay for grad school, I dunno how favorably he'll look upon clases at Studio or Shakespeare Theatre.

I'm not kidding. I hear monstorous things about Serge and I had Kate and she is WONDERFUL in all the good ways and all the ways you want.

Date: 2006-08-02 06:20 am (UTC)He disliked me intensely and refused to give me any help, feedback, direction, or guidance once we got to the scene work. Then he failed me - despite telling me that I had done a good job in my scene and had totally "gotten" my character (to the extent that a woman my age could realistically play a 20-something character). I learned a lot - on my own - but the emotional abuse was like being Harry Potter in Snape's Potions class. Serge's PoR class was the most frustrating waste of time and money that I have spent in theater education.
Admittedly, I have heard wonderful things about Studio classes from other people, but I won't spend the money to take that class again (and it's a pre-req for most of the classes I want); I threw away the Studio catalog that arrived in the mail today. I have learned a great deal from (and enjoyed) Shakespeare Theater classes. If it helps sell your dad on the latter at all, you can tell him the teachers' qualifications: for example, Floyd King also teaches at Julliard.
Good luck.

Thankee!

Date: 2006-08-02 05:35 pm (UTC)I won't wish you luck with PoR - I know you'll do well (and enjoy it). I love Kate's work that I have seen so far. I really wanted to take her C&E (or audition) class. Maybe I will someday get over my feelings about Studio - or work up the initiative to tell someone there about my experience and ask for permission to take C&E - or to retake PoR (with a better teacher) for free. ::shrug::
