Yet another post from me today! Sorry folks.

Thanks for following up with your resume. Always remember to have one as an actor, under any and all audition opportunities. (Even if you think we have one).

Now, the reason that I'm emailing you is to inform you that:

We will not be inviting you into this particular MFA graduate acting company. It is an older group and more experienced. However, I felt from your earlier audition, that you deserved another look due to your unique qualities and steadfast interest in further training.

I wanted you to know our decision sooner than an official letter, and also wanted to thank you for being so brave as to attempt new material, to enter the audition with such short notice, and to stay committed to your training as an actor and a future in the theatre.

You have talent!

You are an interesting guy!

You have a gift for the personal story telling and monologues.

You will improve in every acting class that you take - so I am very happy that you are entering a class at Studio. It speaks well of you to continue pursuing and perfecting your gift.

An MFA for three years, depending on the program, is a very competitive, academic and strenuous committment- sometimes requiring an older individual with more experience. It is a Phd for the actor.

So you have time!

There are national auditions such as URTA's - University resident theatre auditions - in NY and Chicago that you can prepare for and see if another program expresses interest.

I would be glad to help you with your audition if you would like.

Look them up online, the auditions are Jan/Feb - feel free to contact me.

In fact, feel free to contact me with ANY questions you might have regarding this town or other grad programs.

You can always continue your experience in DC, taking classes, doing shows, and re-audition for our program in another two years if you would like to be considered again.

If you're looking sooner than that . . . I noticed in the American theatre magazine that Delaware's program,

located in Wilmington, has a class entering next fall (poss '08) should you want to check them out. It's also a three year program, accepting a class once every three years.

Good luck and thanks again,

Gary Sloan

So yeah, not surprising and not really bad news either. I only wish all rejection notes could be this sincere and encouraging.

Also, it looks like I will be able to do that Woolly Mammoth audition after all. Still not sure if the play is any *good* though. Anyone read or seen Neil LaBute's The Distance from Here?

Wow, that's a GREAT letter!

I know it seems weird to hear after getting what amounts to a rejection letter, but... CONGRATULATIONS. He clearly thinks very highly of you.

make SURE you stay in contact with this guy.
Make it a fricking annual Easter and Halloween card if you have to, but stay in touch.

And thankee!

Not a bad idea.

I think I may hit him up to help me hone my all-purpose audition piece for Leagues and the like. Or maybe help/advice with Hefner Monologues, if he's willing.

Or at the very least, inviting him to my shows and making certain to see his.

I'll never admit to knowing theater that well.
What I do understand is the value of contacts in certain fields.

And be sure to simply update him on how things, like the Monologues are going as well. Balance help with accomplishments.

hef -- congrats, that's really super. this guy is a gem. if you are thinking of making a return for Fall of 2008, let's talk. That's my year too and I'd love to have a buddy along for the ride, it can get very hairy (speaking from exprience).

The delaware program is one of the best in the nation. When I was graduating from college my mentor told me to wait 5 years and then audition there.

And I think I have a copy of the Distance from Here, I'll check. Labute is awesome period and so is Woolly. I really really envy you right now .... but I'm super excited for you as well :)

Ohh man, now *that's* something to consider. Maybe, just maybe! I'd definitely considering it, let's just see where I am in 2008. Because to do that with you would be absolutely bloody awesome.

Yeah, but it's in DELAWARE. I need to be in or near a major city, near movies and theatre and comic stores and neat restaurants. And even if Wilmington has all this... it's still bloody Delaware.

A great idea, I will definitely keep him updating.

Mom suggested inviting him over for dinner some night, offering a big and elegant dinner in exchange for some monologue help. That sounds like a grand possibility to me.

Oh, and shall I send you the job resume? Or how/when shall we do this?

Date: 2006-09-07 07:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] findingjuliet.livejournal.com
yes, just send it to my gmail account. my full name at gmail.com. i'll send an email to my recruiter tomorrow :)

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Will do tomorrow!

I'm getting a bit more cautious about this, as my comic shop is now willing to give me more hours and health insurance if I can commit to them. So anything your recruiter could offer that could be an even better job experience for me with what I need would be best and awesome, is just my concern now.

Resume? You are singing my song!

Darling?

I will also give your resume/CV a read and help.

BUT: GET A LETTER OF REFERENCE FROM THIS GUY, STAT. Seriously - that was the best rejection letter EVER. So get his accolades in writing in the form of a letter of recommendation, and ask him if you can use him again for a written rec even after he gives you one. Like the above commenter said, keep in touch with him! By any means necessary!

Apply again to that program. I think you should apply again in a couple of years, if you aren't already in possession of multiple degrees by then.

Will do! Tonight.

Reference letter? How will that help if I'm giving it to a recruiter looking for a desk job or something? I'll bring it up with the recruiter, who sounds awesome, and see if she can use it for anything. But else, Gary also doesn't know me all that well, nor my work ethic.

I think I definitely shall, aye.

And what IS that icon?

i agree with Annie.. a good reference never hurts. this guy knows good from bad, and he knows you are passionate and dedicated. he's impressed with the fact that you went out on a limb twice to pursue this.

get a reference, and stay in contact.

as for dinner, i'd recommend not doing it at home. thats very personal, and he likes you, but you arent there with him yet. these kind of things, with family around?.. thats alot of pressure. if anything, ask him to do dinner with you alone, someplace nice. thats an hour or two of face time with a guy who can go over things with you in detail.

this is a great relationship to build, but build carefully. he cares, Heffie.. and he doesnt have to.

sad as it is that you didnt get in, he knows what he is talking about so it may well not be the best time for you to do this. but congrats nonetheless, because this offers you a number of opportunities.

so instead we drown our mild disappointment, and fuel our hopeful sense of whats next (fueled with whiskey).

"feel free to contact me."

"In fact, feel free to contact me with ANY questions you might have regarding this town or other grad programs."

Holy-freakin'-crap! w00t!

Damn, dude, just... damn.

It must be killing him not to be able to give you an acceptance letter. :-)

You get a recommendation letter from him for graduate school, silly one! :-) THE MORE THE BETTER.

THAT'S what I meant. And you can turn every single drama class you've ever taken into a job marketable skill. Don't believe me? I'll show you to mack that resume tonight, sugarman.

The icon....

Date: 2006-09-07 11:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com
The icon is Keira Knightley as Guinevere propositioning Clive Owen as King Arthur in the 2004 film, as rewritten by [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda. She does tons of icons every time she does a Movies In Fifteen Minutes treatment of a film.

Her treatment of Arthur is priceless.

This Dracula icon from Van Helsing is another line and icon from her, from her summation of Van Helsing.

I actually respect this guy a lot for being straight with Heffie and being so honest. Most rejection letters don't tell you why you didn't get in, and to know why only HELPS you in the future to better prepare for the next challenge, y'know?

Man, you're making this 1:1 dinner sound ROMANTIC. "A quiet place, hopefully French, with a great wine list and romantic ambience...."

the dinner thing?

here's the deal.. when you dont know someone well, its alot of awkwardness and pressure to be at their home, with their mother.

nuetral ground breeds more comfortability.

even if i do love Heffie's mom.

it could be MY mom.. same story.

Oh! No, no, that's fine, I have no interest in grad school right now. I was particularly interested in Catholic U more than anywhere else, and after meeting with him, I'm convinced that the best thing for me is to get experience, training, and focus on Hefner Monologues (written and performance).

Isn't that awesome?

Best damn rejection letter ever.

It sounded like a serious judgement call on his part, which I frankly think I agree with (after what he said before).

But I am definitely gonna have to gently cultivate this contact and see if I can somehow get his help and guidance for Hefner Monologues and the like. Once I bloody well get iMovie to recognize my iSight, the FIRST thing I am gonna do is start recording myself, practicing the Monologues and maybe even getting them out on Youtube or someplace.

And then, when I feel confident enough for stage, contact him again. That's what I'm a-thinkin' anyway.

Thank you, man!

Heffie. You are missing the point. Good letters of recommendation are WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD. Get on anyway; in a year, you could be in a totally different headspace, and want to go to graduate school. So why are you resisting this? Get the damn letter already!

Hey, send me your e-mail addy RIGHT NOW so's I can send you my resume. I am about to crash, I'm so exhausted. Thankee!

And I'll keep that letter in mind for when I'll actually need it, yes, of course, that will be good. But I have no use for it now! That's why I'm resisting it!

Well, ok, I suppose there's no real rush. I just was finally gonna get my butt in gear and send it to her tomorrow.

I'm gonna hold off on grad school for another year or two and focus (based on his earlier advice from our first audition) on writing/performing the Hefner Monologues, taking conservatory classes, and performing in plays, but being very selective about what I do from now on.

And then, in a couple years, rethink Grad school. Maybe out in Chicago, or maybe even try Gary again at Catholic U. That's mah plan!
