Select retailers and reviewers have read the first issue of the DARK TOWER comic book, and the word is very, very good. I read just the first few pages myself, and let me assure you, they've nailed it. "They" being the writing team of King's assistant Robin Furth (who knows more about DT than even King does) and scripter extraordinaire Peter David (solid writer of comics as well as BABYLON 5, among many other things), based on an in-depth outline by King himself.

Also, Joss Whedon fans: you *do* know he writes X-MEN, right? Did you also know about the forthcoming BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 8 comics? Now, you all know Joss makes my teeth itch, but if I can persuade a handful of you folks to actually pick up a comic or two, it'll make my day.

Because that's the real hope here, to get non-comic readers to actually get curious about the medium. I mean, we're seeing tons of people, usually women who are utter strangers to comics, come in here to pick up the ANITA BLAKE series. Never mind that the comic is utter tripe and a perfect example of why I hate hate hate vampires and their frilly-shirted angsty ways... the fact is, people are buying comics for the first time in their lives. It doesn't matter that the book is (in my eyes) shit; they're reading comics, and maybe, they'll see something else in an ad or in the store and pick up a copy.

I sincerely hope the DARK TOWER and BUFFY comics bring new readers in. And if you're fans of either (or LOST, since the great comic writer Brian K. Vaughan has joined their writing staff) and are curious, I would be more than happy to hook you up with recommendations. And if you can, come on into the store and let me show you around. I even promise to turn down the Hefner Intensity a few notches.

DARK TOWER: THE GUNSLINGER BORN # 1 comes out on February 7th.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 8 # 1 comes out in early March.

*coughsplutter* He writes comics?? No shit?

yeah, my brother has all his X-Men ones-- grew up on X-Men anyway, btw-- I have preordered the Buffy one (and have all the Serenity ones). And I have been known to read other comics, too.

I'm sorry, I don't know why it makes me twitch when you do that, I'm sorry...I'm trying to get better.

*hug* no hate, luv...not even from the BROWNCOAT ;)

...and, yes, I think comics/graphic novels, the whole she-bang can be highly underrated as a media. I get that, and more people should.

(but I also think it's possible for comic peeps to er, em, browncoat them just a little ;)

Hey, I don't deny it. It's the risk I run being a passionate geek, doomed to potentially drive people away from the very thing I love and want to share with the world. It's kinda like a Greek tragedy there.

Still, doesn't mean some of the more extreme contingents of other fandoms don't scare me. Certain gamers, anime fans... c'mon, there has simply got to be something wrong with people who read The Silmarillion for fun! ;)

Frell!

I wasn't hugely interested in the Dark Tower comics-purely on the fact that I havent' read any of the books-but since I heard Jae Lee is the artist, I'm so piqued. (He and Paul Jenkins work on Inhumans I love, and having just finished The Sentry trade paperback, I absolutely adored), so I might check it out. And of course I'm so on top of Buffy season 8 comics :)

I do what I must to get people to read comics! Don't worry, I can't hold it back indefinitely.

If I could, I might actually have a girlfriend... at least for a longer period... ;p

Yeah, DARK TOWER is new-reader friendly.

But if you're interested in the books, I really really recommend you check out THE TALISMAN, which was retconned later into the DARK TOWER series and is one of my favorite books.
