thehefner: (Jesus on the Swing)

This was exactly what I needed to see tonight.

ONCE is one of those rare movies I think I'm comfortable in telling each and every one of you to see. Yes. Yes, I think you all should see it. It's a crime that this sweet, heartfelt, moving little film is going virtually unseen (by anyone I know). What LOST IN TRANSLATION and GARDEN STATE seem to be for everyone else, ONCE is for me. Maybe I should be glad that it hasn't been discovered by everyone else and beaten into the ground, held up to be something it's not, just like LIT and GS.

Even if I weren't in a fragile state, I would likely have cried anyway. As it was... well, when the big song started, the song that the whole film was clearly built around, I was just all but sobbing. From that point on, the film just unfolded wonderfully, and in its own tiny, wonderful little way, earned itself a permanent spot in my heart.

Do any of you remember how, when I saw THE FOUNTAIN, I remarked as to how rare truly beautiful movies are? Regardless of how any of you felt about THE FOUNTAIN, I think that still holds true. By the end of the film, when "Falling Slowly" began to play again, I began crying again, but only this time there was a strange, moved, tight-lipped smile affixed to my face.

I am very stingy when it comes to buying music. Let me tell you, when I got home, the first thing I did was go on iTunes and buy the soundtrack. Has anyone ever heard of the Irish band The Frames? I think I need to seek them out, like pronto.

This is a nearly perfect little film. Seek it out before it vanishes, I beg of you. I may see it again Thursday, just in case it's gone by the weekend.
