thehefner: (The Hefner Monologues Sign)

While my show didn't get any major mentions in the Washington Citypaper Fringe blog, I did track down one comment that went:

Hefner Monologues was entertaining, if some of the dialogue a bit young for me — at times was like frat boy humor, but overall a promising show with wit and vulnerability that I admired.

... frat boy humor?

Good reviews pretty well all around, for which I'm happy, and I look forward to still developing this show. Several plans of attack are lining up, and meantime, I'm gonna tweak and refresh the script here and there. Maybe I should add a story or two, but we'll see if anything fits.

I'm also gonna need to find a way to warm up before the show. No matter what exercises I do, or no matter how I try to run through the stories beforehand, I'm still coming off as a bit stiff, rote, and nervous during the first five or so minutes. It's like I need a warm-up audience before I get in front of my actual audience. I'd ask Serge his advice, but I'd probably just get something like, "Well, you won't do that next time." But otherwise, yeah, all's on the up-and-up.

Still. Frat boy humor?

Still. Frat boy humor?

Yeah, uh, don't know what to tell you there. Maybe because you mention sex? *shrugs*

I'm glad the reviews have been good, and I'm here cheering on the continued development. Let me know if I can do anything more concrete than wave my pom poms. ;-)

You may understand someone using the phrase "frat boy humor" better as you get older--I'm betting it was a comment from someone well into middle age, who is keenly feeling it.

Oh, and I haven't had time to write a review, but I'm glad you're self-aware on the initial stiffness. (I'd chalked it up to Tammy being in the audience, but if it happens every time, then it's good you're aware & will strive to address it.)

I'm swamped, and will all the theatre swirling around me, all of it starring friends, I was force to choose ONE show. It was yours, and it was a good choice.

It's because you mention sex and inebriation. There is a kind of old person who thinks only young people get up to that sort of nonsense.

Yes, 'cause frat boys are big on roses. Also, sometimes it rains gumdrops.

And I have a pony.

Well, there was the point in the show when you pulled out a portrait of Hugh and pointed your finger towards his face, shouting, "Loooook, he's picking his nose! Awesome, brah!"

Seriously? Job well done. I remember my hangup with your dress rehearsal being clarity, and you were much easier to understand when I saw it Sunday. Huzzah!

To be a little more charitable to this "kind of old person" - once the topic goes to sex and drinking, everyone pretty much knows how it's going to turn out. Change the names, the places, and the amounts all you like; but the plot is always going to be "night of wild hedonism, morning of regret".

A story like that HAS to have help, usually in the way of good performance, which I think you had. (Or you can just tell it to people who don't get it yet. Like frat boys.)

That's the lay of that land as I see it. So now you know, too. Hope it helps.

I really do have to wonder how old this person was. Not so old that he doesn't know how to comment on a blog (my mom wouldn't know how to do that)!
