WAC show-canceled!

Nuts nuts nuts.

Welp, THE HEFNER MONOLOGUES show at Washington College is canceled, because it conflicts with the annual Renaissance Dinner. We'll try to reschedule first thing next semester.

It's probably for the best: the posters were coming together pretty last minute, and I have to wonder how many students would rather stay indoors and study for exams than come see the show. And I still have the Baltimore shows, so I can at focus on that.

So, yes. No show at Washington College on December 1st. Scratch that one off your calendars.



In order to cheer myself up, I've been watching Nick Cave's video for "Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow" (thanks, jellied!):

Man. It's like the drunken heroin-addict version of Feist's "1,2,3,4" (a "meh" song in of itself, but as a video, it's pure happy). Clearly, I need to buy more Nick Cave albums, as I think I've listen to "Murder Ballads" about two dozen times by now, and I'm still not tired of it.

But really dude, if the students of WAC would rather study than listen to you spin yarns about Judge James T. McKenna and Blue Surge for an hour-plus, then...then I need to get down to Chestertown with a crate of vodka and my good pal Slurms McKenzie, stat.

I'm sorry but Feist's "1234" does nothing for me. Other than making me want an ipod, a tic tac, and something with sequins on it.

See, it's cool, but... look, I'm a huge sucker for big ol' musical numbers. Give me all ten minutes of "Shipoopie," and I am a giddy man. I realize what this probably means, admitting this to you of all people, but there you go. And the horns! The happy, happy horns! And arms-waving! But as you say, it's trying to sell iPods, thus is is a guilty pleasure.

"Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow," on the other hand, seems to just want to sell rail whiskey and black tar heroin shot right in my eyeball with a rusty syringe.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I was just too lazy to edit (how much do I love the new edit feature?).

I like musicals (I mean I saw Hairspray today at the dollar theater despite my original misgivings that John Travolta looks like a thumb), but I believe they have their place.

I think I'm just more into dance parties (re: Pulp's Common People and most Beck's video canon) than actual musical numbers.

And that black tar sounds amazing right now, considering I haven't slept in two days.

It's so weird, as much as I can be gay for musicals and love candy-colored Broadway pizzazz like THE PRODUCERS, HAIRSPRAY did absolutely nothing for me. I haven't seen the movie version of the musical, but I saw the touring company (the Coach from PARKER LEWIS CAN'T LOSE played the mother, and the father was a customer at my comic store while he was in town) and it just... meh?

But get me going about SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE... sighhhh. Mmm. Or CHESS! Yay CHESS! It's 80's-tastic, and I love it so.

Common People is indeed a thing of wonder and greatness. And I mean both versions. I love them both equally, for different reasons. But it less makes me want to dance as much as it makes me want to perform it like a hyper-charged Hefner Monologue.

Get me a dance-hall song like Oingo Boingo's "Not My Slave," on the other hand, and I am there. Shit, I still need to make that music video of me dancing to that, ala a hyper-kinetic Christopher Walken, in the comic shop.

I had to see it as I'm a bit of a John Waters completist. He plays a flasher in the first five minutes of the movie.

See-- I love the original Hairspray with Divine, Rikki Lake, and oddly enough Vitamin C (remember her?) as Penny Pingleton. This movie-- doesn't really hold a candle to the original, but it's still fluffy enough for me to enjoy it, though admittedly alone, so it dies with me.

I think I may be the only one who felt weird about the casting. Walken? Amanda Bynes? That kid from High School Musical that everyone loses their shit about? Really? Though this may be the only film where I've actually enjoyed James Marsden in.
