LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof on the Writer's Strike and the death of television.

... out of work, Damon? Well, does this mean that maybe now we'll see the third frickin' issue of ULTIMATE WOLVERINE/HULK? Part 2 only came out almost two years ago, after all. ;p

No, snark aside, it continues to baffle me how some people could seriously think the writers are greedy and in the wrong. Why should I even have to point out that someone is getting paid for their internet work, for which they get nothing!

It never occurred to me that the strike could possibly last for months on end, though. I don't even watch TV all that often nor frequently, but just the thought of all non-reality-programming, just shut down all at once, is just enough of a change in status quo to feel unsettling.

Still, as much as I'm going to miss the Daily Show and Colbert, as well as any adult swim cartoons affected in the long run, I'm still behind the writers 100%.

1. The TV is not entertaining me.
2. All of the actors and director and gaffers are ready to go.
3. If the people wrote new stuff, the TV would entertain me once again.

The people who are not writing new stuff are bad people. QED.

No offense but most people don’t see writing as “work”. Try explaining how it’s work to the guy who just spent 60 hours on his feet hauling up and down a ladder that you deserve more money for sitting on your butt and knowing how to use a pencil. It’s the curse of anyone trying to make a living in the entertainment industry, "It’s not really work" is usually the first argument. Ignoring the hundreds and thousands of people who do a whole lot of it as far as production goes (Carpenters, builders, makeup artists and the like.) As for the word strike well that carries the imagery of workers striking to get better wages or safer conditions or the like, not more money from royalties or the internet or what not. Oddly enough it’s probably some of these very writers works of fiction that cause people to think as such.

As for me personally I don’t watch much TV so I could care less about it’s impact on the box. Hey maybe the whole TV structure crashing down around itself will end up being a good thing. Like a cleansing fire.... maybe I shouldn’t use the fire imagery about a problem in California. Moving on. However coming from the athletic field that I do, I can completely understand trying to get as much money as you can out of you endeavors. The longer this goes however the worse I see it getting for the writers.

Y'know, I'm feeling a tad guilty, though it was in no way deliberate on my part, that I'm actually gaining money through this strike.

Well, not gaining so much as no longer losing. Which is to say that with the Daily Show and the Colbert Report on repeats and increasingly less inclination to watch anything else, I've canceled my cable, which saves me $30 a month. Right in time, as it happens, since a few days later, various necessary possessions of mine started breaking XD. Once I actually figure out who my cable company is, though, I'm going to send them a letter pointedly informing them that they've lost my money because of the strike. Least I can do, I figure!

I'd stab you with the sharp wooden handle of a protest sign while calling it Mr. Pointy.

/you know I would

The only rational arguement I've heard against the strike is the fact that other people in tv related jobs are out of work. Which isn't completely wrong, but I find it odd that people think that the studios who refused to cough up those nickels and dimes (literally) in residual checks are in the right while the writers are greedy, overpaid, and lazy.
