Yup, I think there can be a cumulative effect. I watch very closely a comedian called Richard Herring (who has a fab blog at www.richardherring.com). Cumulative is the word for him. He plays Edinburgh every single year. I used to rattle around for him in half-full venues but now he tends to sell out.
I hope you don't lose too much money in Canada though. Herring says he used to lose about £15 000 per Edinburgh Fringe (about $27 000), which gives you some idea of how expensive things can be here. He would make up for it by doing a non-festival tour.
