Thanks Bloo.

Simon Pegg on why Romero-style slow zombies are and will always be superior to Zack-Snyder-style fast zombies.

He makes excellent, thoroughly geeky points. I look forward to referring this to anyone who trashes slow zombies or hold the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake up as better than the original. Depressingly, such people exist.

I am okay with fast zombies.

As a zombie aficionado, I have been fine with shaking up our mythos; trying a new spin on a brilliant theme.

Simon Pegg just made me question all that.

This was brilliant.

I'm surprised he liked 28 Days Later (even though it is one of my favorite horror films). I agree that it's not a true zombie film, more like a plague movie deeply in debt to Romero.

Have there been any other fast zombie movies other that the Dawn reboot?

Yeah, I'm glad he made that distinction. It's an important one that benefits all parties.

Well, there's RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD from the mid-80's, which was also the first zombie film to have zombies that say "brains." It's also a comedy-horror, but it counts, because it's awesome.

Ha, I can't believe I didn't think to send this to you! The dude makes great arguments, touching upon things that I'm ashamed I didn't even think about when it came to zombie movies.

"Send more cops" is worth breaking the rules for, all by itself.

I read that today too. Good one, no?

I watched all of "Dead Set" (she show which made Pegg write this) twice. It was brilliant. Even though the zombies were fast ones.

Hey, I read that just yesterday. Guardian newspaper always has the most fun stuff.

Dead Set was very good & I reccommend it to all folk who like satire and zombies. Though perhaps the sheer unadulterated joy that UK watchers got from watching Davina McCall get zombified may be lost on you Yankees.

(Pretty much the whole of last week in my work was a game of "Let's pretend to be zombie Davina McCall!" Even senior management got in on the act.)

I definitely want to check out this series... just as I'm interested in the World War Z film adapatation (that should be a miniseries.) Seeing another genre send up Big Brother (as the revamped Dr. Who did in its first season) should be fun too

I liked Pegg's article (and have always loved the Guardian since the days my folks subscribed to the weekly edition.) As I've just gone back to play for the first time some of the Resident Evil series and going back from time to time playing the various versions of Half Life 2 with its headcrab zombies (with a balanced mix of some fast and more slow versions-Play the Ravenholm level, pure awesome) Slow zombies give a better feeling of immersive overwhelming fear, whereas fast zombies have the same feeling as Aliens, quick instant death.

And I LOVED the Return of the Dead movies...

I hold a soft spot for the remake because I did like the "Blair Witch" ending and it was the last work Richard Briggs of Babylon 5's Dr. Franklin fame (well as little as it was except for the cool bonus extra on the DVD of just him as a newscaster alone working during the outbreak - plus Bruce Boxlietner as the US Pres during one moment. Yup, Snyder's a B5 fan.)

A last thing, Im sorry if I missed you at Karaoke or Mo's last night before you head out... these thankfully dissipating headaches kept me from doing anything these past few days. I wish you happy trails.

I want to see the series, but don't think I be able to. Oh well I'm sure it be on youtube later or anywhere else on the web. :)

Simon Pegg makes some good points and make me question liking fast zombies in horror movies. Not all the time, mind you but once in awhile it can work in movies.

Yeah, I'd agree that there is a place for fast zombies, depending on the story. But it has to be the right kind of story. Me, I think WORLD WAR Z is a perfect example of taking Romero's slow zombie genre and taking it to the next level, rather than the DAWN remake. Have you read it? It's really quite wonderful.
