I'm offering my Rehoboth Beach house up for rent for this July 4th weekend--Friday through Monday--for $480 ($400 for me, $80 for the cleaning lady).

The house is off Route 1, right between Rehoboth and Lewes, if you know where that is. Essentially, it's a ten minute drive to the beach, nested in a secluded area which makes it an ideal private getaway. Thus why I love using it as a writer's retreat. It has a screen porch overlooking the tidal creek and Cape Henlopen State Park.

Plus, we have beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, and 2 bicycles for use. We have 1 king bed,1 queen bed, 1 full bed, a pull out that makes into a twin bed and an ottoman that makes another twin. So plenty of room for a group! Let me know if you're interested.

If no one takes it, then Henchgirl and I will. She's never seen fireworks, and while I suspect the DC display would be a bit more dazzling, I'm sure the ones at Rehoboth Beach will look plenty awesome. Especially with a pint of Dogfish Head inside me.

In movies, never in real life. The poor girl's been deprived to an absurd extent when it comes to holidays. Hell, in her household, she was never allowed to have birthday parties. Wrap your mind around that. Jehovah's Witnesses, man. *shudder*

It was only out of sheer laziness on my part that I didn't go through with my threat to go full-on PAAS for Easter, as she'd never celebrated a proper Easter before. But at least Mom scheduled an egg hunt.

For the first time...

...this is a very tempting prospect. By the time I'm done mulling it over, I'm sure it'll have passed. Damn my lack of free flowing fundage.

(And, really, I'm kinda surprised that no one has just jumped right on this.)

Honestly, I'm not a fan of them. They're pretty, sure, but not pretty enough to merit the immense hassle that goes into viewing them. Especially since I've seen 'em before.

I am happy that such a simple pleasure has persisted into this instant-gratification era. Fireworks are a spectacle you can't see on TV. They've gotten more sophisticated since 1776, but people are still delighted with the basic star effect.

So yeah, it is the sort of thing you should do once, absolutely. But I hope nobody minds if I'm doing something else Sunday evening.

We had a few people over for the Fourth a few years ago. The rowhouse in which we were then living has a roof-top deck, so we went up there to watch fireworks. We could see fireworks in any direction we looked: over the harbor, up by Towson, etc. It was rather nifty, in the light misty rain. Then we realized Elise's hair was starting stick straight up and a few of us - all at about the same time - said, "We have to get off this roof, now." And that was that.

Have a good time in Rehoboth.

I'll readily admit I am a creature of simple pleasures.

I don't except everybody to get as excited as I do for fireworks, it just seems... well, first off, improbable that someone would have never been exposed to them, since they're a nationwide civic phenomenon at least twice a year. Also somewhat unjust that someone has been denied the chance to enjoy free, simple, harmless, wholesome, downright american public entertainment where we blow shit up.

That makes my day.
