Misty and I just watched the first half of the film version of Eugene O'Neill's LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. Only half so far. And a half hour into it, I felt like someone had completely, thoroughly kicked my ass.
I'm not the hugest fan of Katherine Hepburn's... Hepburness, but holy shit she (alongside the always amazing Jason Robards, painfully young and cute Dean Stockwell, and miscast rolling-r shakespearian and Gielgud-buggerer Sir Ralph Richardson) had me moved to near tears in the first half hour. Never, ever have I nearly been moved to tears by pure, heartbreaking intensity before. Or maybe it's just the simple fact that this play, including but more so than any other O'Neill work, is so deeply Goddamn personal to me. Oh God.
I can't wait to watch the DVD of MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN this weekend, with Robards returning to reprise his role of LDJIN's Jamie Tyrone, 25 years later. I really wish more people could witness the utter brilliance of O'Neill's work, but I suppose that whole 4 1/2+ hour running time to his masterpieces makes them kind of hard to stage. A damn shame, that is.
