I seriously dislike Michael Kahn. I really, really do. While he may be hailed as one of the greatest Shakespeare directors in the country, I find his Shakespeare interpretations all too often jarring, annoying, or just plain stupid. His Lear was quite frankly the worst Lear I've ever seen, and Lear's an easy play to do badly, so considering all the bad versions I've seen that's a feat. The best play of his I ever saw was Hedda Gabler, and even though I dislike both the author and the play itself, in terms of a show it was ironically one of the few truly great shows Kahn ever directed.
Well, he's directing Cyrano. One of my favorite plays, with one of my favorite characters. A play that, if done wrong, will seem really, really, REALLY long and boring. I was probably gonna see it anyway, but I was still aprehensive. And then they announced the cast.
David Sabin as the loveable baker Ragueneau and Andrew Long as the complex antagonist Count de Guiche. Ooh, nice casting. Two of my DC acting favs in perfect roles. Sabin's gonna be so wonderful and cuddly, and Long should be able to do justice to Guiche. And Cyrano himself is gonna be played by Geraint Wyn Davies. The star of Forever Knight! Anyone else remember this show? It was like Angel, a 200+ year old vampire seeking redemption as a cop in Toronto. Ah, great show, he's gonna rock as Cyrano. Kick-ass.
I'm not sure when I'll be going, but if anyone's interested in tagging along, let me know. Maybe we'll arrangea group or something.
