I hope people understood that when I was talking about "masochistic" tendencies, I wasn't talking about performing physically hurtful actions. I was just being a wee bit stupid again, but the point was that I'm getting better. I think. I hope.

Also, I want to sincerely thank everyone, from the bottom of my heart, for reading MY GRANDFATHER'S LAST WORDS and for your comments. It really means a lot to me, because it means, okay, a book of THE HEFNER MONOLOGUES just might actually work. Of course, the trick here is that any other monologues will not be about my grandfather's or anyone else's life; it's my own. And can my own life, with its angst and comic geekiness and wonderful humiliation, can it hold up to what I wrote about my grandfather? That's the real trick. As such, I will be somewhat reluctant to post any other monologues here for a while. Here's hoping.

I just found a website that has George A. Romero's ORIGINAL big-budget script for DAY OF THE DEAD. Oooooooo. I'm reading it now to see if it can't provide more Bub insight, assuming Bub was in the original at all.

Kev's party last night was fun. Always great to see Kevin, Mickey, Boothe, and Ridgaway all in the same room again, especially because we all get to talk tell stories of certain "old friends" from WAC. And talk trash about them as well, always fun. Aw, we don't really hate them per se, but it's so much more fun (and in some instances, less painful) to pretend that we do. Kinda like the French.

Saw some new film trailers. Everything is Illuminated, Liev Schreiber's directorial debut with Elijah Wood looks charming, odd, and beautiful, while Steve Martin's long-awaited adaptation of his novella ShopGirl looks surprisingly low-key and moving. Claire Danes is aging very gracefully, and it's nice to see Jason Schwartzman at it again. And it goes without saying that it's nice to see Steve in something that looks like a return to his glory days, the swan song of which being L.A. STORY (I don't care what critics say, I still think BOWFINGER was kinda lame).

I wouldn't stress too much about the other stories "measuring up." Look at "Holidays on Ice" by David Sedaris. There's the anchor story, "Santaland Diaries," and the others support it. They're not as gut-bustingly funny or as famous, but they're just as well written.
