Johnny Go meets Bub in Person
Aug. 22nd, 2005 11:21 am(Note: This was one of the weirdest fucking weekends I've had in a long time. This weekend could be made into a whole play just in of itself. A lot of was learned, stuff confirmed, revealed, explored, etc. I won't be posting it here, though. This stuff will only be revealed upon publication of The Hefner Monologues. Oh, and I'm at work now, running on five hours of sleep. Yayyy! Anyway, onto the post)
Dude. Dude. We just fucking met Bub the Zombie himself.
Okay. First of all, the production of Brecht's Life of Galileo was very, very good. This was probably the most conventional, straight-forward Brecht script I ever seen. The show was great, very moving, and it became clear to me halfway through that the play was being produced because it's timely, considering what's happening today in the struggle between fundamental religion and science. Good play.
But dude...! It's BUB! And he was fucking huge. Just look at him!

Erm, in case you couldn't figure it out, Sherman Howard (Bub!) is the big guy with the beard. The pic doesn't even do his size in person justice.
He delivered a wonderful performance, full of presence and warmth. Dave said he wanted to see him play King Lear, and holy shit, he'd be amazing. Absolutely amazing. He'd deliver a Lear that could rage with the best with them and bring you to your knees crying. I'll have to keep my eye on the Shakespeare Theatre of NJ site (www.shakespearenj.com) to see if it happens, since he's their resident celebrity actor. Not for Day of the Dead, I'm sure. No, DOTD wasn't even listed in his bio. He rather more prominently listed his appearances on "Seinfeld" and "Law and Order" and other theatre productions.
So when Dave and I went to wait by the stage door for his autograph afterwards, I was suddenly hit the fear that he would look down at us for so loving that particular role. I mean, as Dave said, there's a reason why Tim Curry avoids his fans. Then again, I think Dave and I are the only Bub the Zombie groupies in existence. We certainly were there. Then again, Jonathan Pryce kinda sneered when, after seeing him in a lovely play in London, I said, "I loved Brazil!" So I wasn't sure what to think. Or if Sherman Howard would even come out.
After everyone had left and just when Dave and I were thinking about calling it a night, he came to the door. And oh my god, he was fucking huuuuge. His hand was a gigantic meat claw. He smiled warmly, perhaps surprised to see he had people looking for autographs. I complimented him deeply for his amazing performance, and then said, "My friend and I, we're... well, we're kind of embarrassed, you see..." and I then revealed that I was holding him DVD special edition of Day of the Dead.
Sherman laughed and gladly signed both our copies. And then... I got my picture with him. Once I use of the rest of the film in the camera, I am getting that motherfucker developed and I SO hope it turns out well. Because it will be photographic evidence that just once, once in this crazy world of ours where dreams so rarely come true... that Johnny Go met Bub.
