So my mom went all the way up to the Shady Grove branch of BB&T to pay off the debt and to close my account. While there, she discovered just why the bank hadn't bothered to call me up and/or cancel my card when I started overdrawing from my account like they did last time- apparantly the bank at some point instituted a new policy that they would let the idiots who overdraw their account keep doing so for 45 days before they stopped them. Think about that. 45 days.

Furious over this scam, my mother told them to close out her account as well. As well as Dama's account. As well as our mortgage. All of which added up to around $80,000. The teller said, "Uh... this is a lot of money to be taking out of our bank. Why don't you go talk to your home branch and see if we can't work something out."

Fuck yeah, Mom.

She said her plan is she'll only keep all her money there if they give me at least $400 back, otherwise she's taking it all elsewhere.

A funny note: I'm working at the comic shop now, and while I was telling [livejournal.com profile] gore_whore_5 about this over the phone, a guy in the store piped up "I know what you're talking about, man! BB&T just did the exact same thing to me! They charged me $1,000 and I couldn't get a house because my credit's now ruined!" Glad to know I'm not the only one being fucked over here. My Dad's lawyer suggested I bring this before the US banking commission. We'll see. I'd hate to make an ass out of myself even more than I already have.

I tell you, though. Few things make me feel better than someone genuinely interested to hear me talk about comics. And while it's not necessary, said someone being a pretty girl is a nice perk.

You know, that seems HIGHLY unethical to me. While I am not a lawyer, I think the fact that the lawyer suggested laying it before the commission might be worth the time. Who knows if it will have any effect, but still..
And what your mom did was really cool.

I used to do this for a living

Ever since the great depression, every bank has a regulatory agency. most financial institutions have two.

Skip the banking comission. those are bankers talking to bankers. Practically like talking to the Teamsters about their own employees.

For BB&T, you want to talk to the FDIC, but especially the Maryland comptroller, over in annapolis. they're the regulatory agency for every Maryland chartered bank, like your BB&T. they set rules, guidelines, safety, and consumer practices. This includes any rules that may be on the books about fees.

they'll best tell you if BB&T actually did something wrong.

Shit, Hef, if what they're doing isn't illegal, it SHOULD be. Right about now I'm thankful that I have overdraft protection - if my checking account is empty, they automatically take it out of savings. I would be royally pissed, and I still am - for you. You know I don't get angry easily, haha.

Love the icon. Glad you're chatting up a pretty girl, because after all, "You don't want to end up old and lonely like ZOIDBERG! *sobbing*"

Man, what asshats. That can't be legal, and if isn't, it should be.

Go your Mom!

Shouldn't! Shouldn't!

This my punishment for trying to juggle a fudge stick and typing.
