stupid Whedon and yay for Ray Wise
Oct. 31st, 2005 11:09 amJoss Whedon has decreed that Wonder Woman will not be wearing the star-spangled panties in the movie. I do not approve.
So I saw Good Night, And Good Luck last night. I really enjoyed it, loved how minimalistic it was and how it was refreshingly lacking in dramatic fictionalized stuff and let the real drama speak for itself. And may I say that, anti-smoking as I am, that cigarette smoke is so fucking beautiful in black and white? My god. But one thing about the movie stuck out for me more than anything else:

Ray Wise, baby. Fuck yeah. I've been skimming over reviews on rottentomatoes and such to see if there's any mention of his performance as Don Hollenbeck. Not surprisingly, all reviews talk about the history behind the movie almost more than the movie itself, and if the acting chops of anyone is discussed, it's David Stratharin. And rightly so; Stratharin was fucking amazing. He's always been one of "those guys" you see in films (the only one I recall offhand is he was the pimp in L.A. Confidential), a character actor, a working actor. And like so many of those actors, he has far more talent than those little supporting roles can really show, so when he gets a chance to shine like this, it's amazing. Same absolutely applies to Ray Wise.
If you recognize him at all, chances are it's from Twin Peaks, where he played Leland Palmer. He hasn't done much since, mainly a couple indie films as well as an Ahab character in Jeepers Creepers 2, god help me. In Good Night, And Good Luck, his performance as Hollenbeck was deeply affecting the moment he appeared on screen. He is so powerful at conveying quiet, smiling, sad dignity all at once, and I honestly think he was the emotional human heart of the film. Way more so than the subplot with Robert Downey Jr. and Patricia Clarkson, of which I frankly expected a lot more.
Here's the think. Downey and Jeff Daniels are brilliant actors, and Daniels is especially underrated. Yet they were listed in the six-name-long top billing on the poster, but not Ray Wise. That's a damn shame. He's one of those actors that make me want to become a director just so I can cast them in something.
