My theorem goes as follows:

Bailey's Irish Cream + Egg Nog = CRAZY DELICIOUS

Full report on the experiment forthcoming.

(if I refridgerate Baileys after opening it, how long will it last?)

The bottle of Bailey's should last for months in the refrigerator...plenty of time for you to finish it. ;-)

I'm interested in the results of your experiment, as each is crazy delicious by itself! Love your icon, btw. My brother and I have been laughing at Lazy Sunday for days now. "Call us Aaron Burr..." is my favorite line. I'm such a nerd!

Yes! That's my favorite line too! Haha! I'm so glad other people know "Lazy Sunday"; I've been crazy for it for the past week!

I have a strange fascination for Aaron Burr, can't quite explain it. Add to that, I'm a sucker for historical/literary jokes, and it makes me a happy Heffie.

For the record: eggnog = GRODY in my book, but I approve of Baileys and can almost see why you'd combine them. Is it pre-rummed nog?

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
I can understand one thinking it grody, but it's still the yumminess to me. But nay, it shall be non-rummed. Perhaps if this version proves successful, I shall try again with rum, otherwise why waste good baileys?

From: [identity profile] eliyes.livejournal.com
Around here, eggnog is default "with rum". As my mother is allergic to rum, you can imagine how this did nothing to help be form a favourable opinion of the stuff.

...Query: Hamiltons? Is this someone on your money, then?

Have you heard of "All about the Benjammins?" Whereas those are 100 dollar bills, "Hamiltons" refer to 10 bills. It's a joke from the SNL sketch "Lazy Sunday", which can be found here

http://gorillamask.net/snlnarnia.shtml

I don't suppose the name "Aaron Burr" means anything to you fellas either, huh? That's my personal favorite joke in the rap.

I gotsta say, that doesn't sound crazy delicious... i feel like the flavor combo would be weird. But I'll try anything once and I have some bailey's and eggnog on hand, so we shall see.

In the meantime, some of gawayn's friends described how to make a "ghemosa" at thanksgiving dinner, and I'd like to give you the theorem for that:

Coors Lite + Orange Juice = Not so CRAZY DELICIOUS

Now that would be a weird flavor combo.

Looks like I'm fresh outta regular egg nog for now (we have the vanilla flavored kind, but what's the point?) so the experiment for my part shall have to wait till tomorrow. If Safeway's even open, that is.

But that theorem you describe above sounds, to use another friend's term, totally grody. Then again, you could at least choose a better beer, couldn't you?

Yes it did, and it's one of the funniest lines in the whole song... oh, nevermind, I'm old and elucidated.

You'd think the "got milk?" commercial would have set that bit of trivia firmly in the public conscious... or maybe it did.

<3 the new icons, btw.

Heck, I've never even refrigerated Bailey's after opening, and it lasts a good while.

I think it did, actually... lord knows whenever I bring Burr up to my mother, she instantly responds with "Aaruh Buhh!"

And I've taken the opportunity to use up all the Lazy Sunday icons here, since I wasn't sure if I'd ever get the chance elsewhere. Glad you like 'em!

I have a strange fascination for Aaron Burr, can't quite explain it.

I'm fascinated with the entire concept of duels, myself. That's probably it for me. Such ritual and civility for something that's basically insane!

I'm a sucker for historical/literary jokes

My brother (who's also a John) and I are too...we get them most of the time, and look them up when we don't. You learn some cool stuff that way! I love it when folks don't play comedy to the lowest common denominator all the time. Historical and literary jokes are like a reward for engaging my brain as a viewer!

i mean, you could choose a better beer, but that's kind of defeating the whole purpose of the "ghetto" aspect of the "ghemosa." The point is to use crappy cheap beer.

and btw, i stand corrected. I tried your theorem last night and it was actually pretty good. i still tend to prefer brandy or bourbon in my eggnog, but i was shocked at how good it was with bailey's. you know what the best eggnog combo is though? It's the eggnog chai latte they make at starbucks. HOLY SHIT, eggnog and chai work sooooo so well together, it's amazing.

nor have I. I will attest though, that it does not in fact have a shelf life longer than around 8 years. I know this because my parents kept a couple of bottles that long and when I tried to raid their liquor cabinet to drink them, if found the cream had become too solid to pour, and after much effort to clear the neck of the bottle, it just came out chunky.

that, my friend, is gross.

Yes, it is... and that is the possibility that makes the prospect of drinking a Cement Mixer (contains Bailey's and lime juice, which causes the Bailey's to curdle) quite unpleasant to me. I understand that it tastes all right, but ... urggghh.

Merry Christmas, Melissa!

Have you seen The Duellists? Similarly, have you seen Woody Allen's Love and Death? Two great films that deal with duelling in rather different ways.

I totally get that reward idea! It's like a cookie for your brain! My favorite literary in-joke is in "The Producers," which they kept for the musical, even though no one gets it but me, it seems. "Yes, Prince Myshkin, how may I be of service?" I was the only one in the theatre giggling. (Look it up if you must... it's from one of my all-time favorite novels)

I haven't seen either film, but I'll add them to my list. And your literary reference is from The Idiot, right? I've got a copy, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. (You know, law school....) But now that I'm free, I'll make it next on my reading list!

Yep, that it is! The book kinda boggs down after the rather excellent first 1/3rd, but the good in the book was absolutely wonderful, at least to me. I loved it so much, out of boredom I actually wrote a stage adaptation (not yet produced).

I'd also suggest The Brothers Karamazov, as it's my favorite novel of all time. It is in many ways a redux of The Idiot, although much more hopeful and more fully realized. Even if you don't care for The Idiot, I'd wholeheartedly suggest giving that one a try.

In either case, it's imperitive that you read the latest translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volohonsky, as the old ones, particularly the Constance Garrett translations, are as dry and boring as everyone thinks Russian literature is.

I read The Brothers Karamazov during Christmas break my sophomore year of college (a couple of my friends had just spent the fall in Russia, so it was sort of in their honor), and I loved it. I can't remember which translation I read, but it worked out just fine. Thanks for the translation recommendation, anyway. I'll have to find their version of The Idiot.

Yay for book geeks. ;-)

Yay for book geeks!

Yeah, do let me know what you think of The Idiot! And if you can track it down, I really loved the movie of Brothers Karamazov starring Yul Brenner and William Shatner.

Will do!

Well, if the question involves Yul Brenner, the answer from me is almost always yes, so I'll do my best to find it. :-)

Lazy Sunday got written up in the New York Times today...thought you might enjoy reading the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/27/arts/television/27samb.html?ex=1136350800&en=8c8733281bb85c11&ei=5070

Oh that's great. I was wondering if we'd get any insight on that, actually. Very cool.

Thankee!
