My brother (who's also a John) and I are too...we get them most of the time, and look them up when we don't. You learn some cool stuff that way! I love it when folks don't play comedy to the lowest common denominator all the time. Historical and literary jokes are like a reward for engaging my brain as a viewer!

I totally get that reward idea! It's like a cookie for your brain! My favorite literary in-joke is in "The Producers," which they kept for the musical, even though no one gets it but me, it seems. "Yes, Prince Myshkin, how may I be of service?" I was the only one in the theatre giggling. (Look it up if you must... it's from one of my all-time favorite novels)

Yep, that it is! The book kinda boggs down after the rather excellent first 1/3rd, but the good in the book was absolutely wonderful, at least to me. I loved it so much, out of boredom I actually wrote a stage adaptation (not yet produced).

I'd also suggest The Brothers Karamazov, as it's my favorite novel of all time. It is in many ways a redux of The Idiot, although much more hopeful and more fully realized. Even if you don't care for The Idiot, I'd wholeheartedly suggest giving that one a try.

In either case, it's imperitive that you read the latest translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volohonsky, as the old ones, particularly the Constance Garrett translations, are as dry and boring as everyone thinks Russian literature is.

I read The Brothers Karamazov during Christmas break my sophomore year of college (a couple of my friends had just spent the fall in Russia, so it was sort of in their honor), and I loved it. I can't remember which translation I read, but it worked out just fine. Thanks for the translation recommendation, anyway. I'll have to find their version of The Idiot.

Around here, eggnog is default "with rum". As my mother is allergic to rum, you can imagine how this did nothing to help be form a favourable opinion of the stuff.

and btw, i stand corrected. I tried your theorem last night and it was actually pretty good. i still tend to prefer brandy or bourbon in my eggnog, but i was shocked at how good it was with bailey's. you know what the best eggnog combo is though? It's the eggnog chai latte they make at starbucks. HOLY SHIT, eggnog and chai work sooooo so well together, it's amazing.

Heck, I've never even refrigerated Bailey's after opening, and it lasts a good while.

nor have I. I will attest though, that it does not in fact have a shelf life longer than around 8 years. I know this because my parents kept a couple of bottles that long and when I tried to raid their liquor cabinet to drink them, if found the cream had become too solid to pour, and after much effort to clear the neck of the bottle, it just came out chunky.

Yes, it is... and that is the possibility that makes the prospect of drinking a Cement Mixer (contains Bailey's and lime juice, which causes the Bailey's to curdle) quite unpleasant to me. I understand that it tastes all right, but ... urggghh.
