MAY and a Meme
Jan. 10th, 2006 11:17 amHas anyone seen the movie MAY directed by Lucky McKee of "Alice" fame? I saw it yesterday while drawing comic pages. On one hand, it sometimes feels like it's trying to hard to be what it is, that is to say, something tailor made for people who go to Hot Topic (like Emily the Strange... what the fuck is the deal with Emily the Fucking Strange?!). I mean, it's Lucky McKee, for god's sake. On the other hand, I haven't been able to stop thinking about this film since I saw it.
There's only a small handful of people out there I'd actually recommend seeing this film, people like Danny, Lea, Misty, etc. It's crazy, Angela Bettis's May totally was Misty, it was fucking crazy. All she needed was to be blond and scowling more, and it would have totally been her. Wow. I imagine a lot of people will call this film beautiful and moving. Those are the people who, like MAY, I must resist the urge to date at all costs. I'm still not sure if I liked the movie, but damn if it'll be in my head for awhile yet.

Date: 2006-01-10 08:06 pm (UTC)Near as I can tell, Emily the Strange is basically Hello Kitty for goths/wannabe goths. Google her, you'll find stuff. There're Emily t-shirts and purses and shit with the usual glib anti-social and therefore "cool" sayings. It's just a character without much anything in the way of real stories or source material like that. From what I've seen, she's become about as much a mainstay in the Hot Topic as Foamy (the difference being that Foamy is actually funny once in awhile).

3. Where you live: New York City 8 months/year. The rest of the time, Fulton, MD.
4. What makes you happy: Intimate chats with good friends over drinks and/or hookah.
5. Currently listening/the last thing you listened to: Stand By Me - Oasis
6. Do you read my journal?: Yes, except when I'm in skim mode anyways.
7. If yes, what makes it especially good or bad?: You're really really enthusiastic about almost everything you post about, which is both good and bad... but mostly good. ;)
8. An interesting fact about you: I have a twin sister.
9. Are you in love/do you have a crush at the moment?: I have a sort of crush on a friend of mine at school but i'm like 99% sure that won't work out since he's kind of a player and generally dates girls much much more attractive in a conventional way than I am and I'm pretty sure I'm in that friend zone now, and not only that there's a good chance he'll end up being gay anyway, so...
10. Favourite place to spend time: Bennigan's or Prince Cafe when I'm in MD, in NYC... hmm. This year it's mostly just been my dorm room. I'm much less of a social butterfly this year.
11. Favourite lyric: I could make a career of being blue, I could dress in black and read Camus, smoke clove cigarettes and drink vermouth, like I was seventeen, that would be a scream but I don't wanna get over you. - "I Don't Want to Get Over You" by the Magnetic Fields. Also, the entirety of the lyrics to "A Pretty Girl Is Like..." by the same.
12. The best time of the year: Getting up to go to Dramaturgy class one morning and find that it was cancelled. For lack of anything better to do, I decided to spend three hours with Uncle Vanya and a cappucino while curled up on a couch inside Starbucks before my next class. That and the end of the year Group A party at Ted's apartment, particularly Blake and Ali's drunken antics. Good times.
RECOMMEND
1. A film: Cellular. It's just a stupid action movie, but it doesn't take itself terribly seriously and features Bill Macy as a police officer who is mocked mercilessly by his colleagues because he is leaving the force to open a dayspa with his wife. It's good fun.
2. A book: The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
3. A band, a song, or album: The Magnetic Fields
4. A new LJ friend: myactingjournal. that's the best I got, as I'm pretty sure you're already friends with almost everyone on my friendslist.
PLUS
1. One thing you like about me: You have limitless ambition and passion for your work.
2. Two things you like about yourself: I'm sincere in my desire for self-improvement even if i rarely live up to my own standards, and I refuse to settle for less than my best work in school - even though I wait till the last minute to do it!
3. Look at my friends-list and tell what you like about one of our mutual friends: I like
4. Put this in your journal so that I can tell you what I like about you. Okay.
