The thing about goth clubs... I know goths to be pretty cool people, folk with whom I can hold all manner of geek conversations. They are generally a pretty nice bunch. The problem is that they're also hugely anti-social to anyone they don't know.

Going to a goth club is like walking into a room where every single person (who isn't with friends) is isolated within their own sphere of existence, as if no one else is there. This became evident to me on the dance floor, where they would go about their various dance-like motions in complete solitude, not caring how utterly ridiculous they looked (as opposed to when you're dancing with another person or two, when they could share in your silliness). It reminded me of my senior prom where I ended up slow-dancing by myself.

So yeah, my usual pattern at the club last night consisted of- wander around, attempt to mingle, attempt to establish eye contact with somebody, fail, go to bathroom, get water, repeat.

(I *did* meet a guy who mistook me for a guy who chained himself to him at an S&M club last Tuesday. As [livejournal.com profile] scarydavedc put it to me afterwards: "You may not be somebody, but at least you *look* like a somebody!")

But ultimately, I can laugh about things. If only because of the funny patterns that occur, making last night just another variation on a theme from things like my Hefner Monologue, ALONE AT THE EMM GRYNER CONCERT.

all the reasons you just stated are why I LOVED alchemy when I went. The people dancing alone that look like retards? They make ME feel like I CAN dance, which is a feeling I rarely get to experience. And I'm anti-social with people I don't know too! And nobody expects me to be any different in a goth club!!! Guys don't try to pick you up all night in a goth club. Nobody bothers you. And maybe if you're not dressed in black and fishnets and the latest Hot Topic fashions people think they're superior to you and that you're not really part of the scene ... but they're goths. Respecting your right to be different is part of what that scene's all about. If they don't respect your right to be different are just poseurs. Actually I'm gonna say that ought to go for almost every subculture, but it's not always the case. It would definitely suck to be there alone, but as long as you're with friends it's kind of cool as hell. at least for me it was.
