Windsor, 1977: the hair was long, the music was tacky, the clothes
were polyester, and Falstaff was in his element. In the era that
taste forgot, as the hippies turned into yuppies, the sexual
revolution gave even the skuzziest men a bit of hope. Falstaff sniffs
the scent of opportunity, or at least Old Spice.
The Rude Mechanicals return to the decade that produced many of them,
to live out their fashion nightmare on stage. The audition forms were
very clear: Everybody will disco. Fiercely devoted to both the
authentic texts of William Shakespeare and the power of modern
theater styles to make audiences laugh, cry, and wince in horror at
trends they'd tried to forget, the Rude Mechanicals have attracted a
devoted following both among audiences and among actors.
It's funny, bitches!
