I think we were all wondering how devout Scientologist Issac Hayes reacted to South Park's brilliant and frankly daring skewering of Scientology. Now we know. He's quit the show.
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry toward religious beliefs ... begins," Hayes said in a statement.
(by the way, I didn't realize Lisa Marie Presley was a Scientologist. Now I have a reason to hate her beyond the fact that she pressured Nick Cage into selling his comic book collection. If I owned a copy of Action Comics #1, not even a woman could get me to sell that. And seriously, what kind of woman would want that?! Clearly, a Scientologist)
I like Matt Stone's response on CNN.com: "In ten years and over 150 episodes of 'South Park,' Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslim, Mormons or Jews," Stone said in a statement issued by the Comedy Central network. He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show."
It's not so much that I think Scientologists are all nuts as much as that I wonder why they are all such a defenseless, humorless bunch? But while we're on the subject of them all being nuts, I remember watching the now-infamous South Park episode, telling the origins and beliefs of Scientology with a flashing banner of "THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE", and I remember thinking, "Well, on one hand, is this any dumber than what Christians, Jews, Muslims, Pagans, etc believe? Is it any more silly than, say, believing in a man walking on water? On the other hand, YES!"
