eye update

Welp, had my follow-up appointment with the opthamoligist. He said my eye has really improved, that the pressure is much better, that the swelling and inflammation are gone, as are the spots in front of my eye. Negative for glaucoma. All great news.

So... uh... what about the floaters that I'm still seeing? The ones that I went to see him about in the first place?

Those, I have to live with, it seems. Unless they become a more serious problem, in which case, I'd have to undergo surgery. But till then, I have a whole new cluster of constant companions to follow me around everywhere in my left eye. Huzzah.

In other medical news, my father called me from the hospital to tell me he'd broken his hip and was taken to get surgery. So while he's getting ready for physical therapy, I suspect we're both wondering what this will mean from now. A nursing home? A nurse to come to his house?

These next few days will prove interesting. But then, this is me. The next few days always do.

Do your little floaties look like bugs and/or shrimp with tentacles or flagellum? or is it flagellae? I dunno. Biology doesn't mix easily with an English major brain. Anyway, I have little floaties, too. My eye doctor said it was just regular bacteria that most people get at some point. We just can't all see them. I think she may have been patronizing me a little because I was a bit scared about them, but if it was something to really worry over, she would have told me.

Also, that is David Bowie in your icon. He must be keeping a little fairy or something in his closet because it simply isn't natural to look that good when you are over retirement age.

They look like... best I can put it is like a bug splapped on the windshield. They're constant, not moving. There's a lot of small ones, but one particularly noticible cluster just off-center of my vision. I think mine have more to do with deposits that have collected/formed inside. I'm told my grandfather had the same for years and years.

As I understand it, the floaters are clumps of solidifed eye-goo ("vitreous humor") and sometimes bits of old blood vessel, not bacteria. I dunno if your doctor was messing with you, patronizing you, or what. You just gradually accumulate them as you get older, and trauma (like an infection) will cause them, too.

They're generally considered harmless. They can be removed if you get so many that they start to interfere with vision (in a procedure too disgusting to even begin to describe), but that's very, very rare.
