So I finally saw DIE HARD.

That was one of the dumbest fucking movies I've ever seen in my life. Or at least, it was the dumbest fucking movie that I saw which I was *expecting* to be excellent. It's up there with the SCARFACE remake.

Seriously, I was wondering where McBain was.

Y'know, if only it had just a teeny bit more ironic humor, it would have been brilliant. It just needed to be a teeny, weeny bit closer to, say, LAST BOY SCOUT or even SNAKES ON A PLANE levels of self-awareness to actually be awesome. And yet, it was just that one shade too straight-faced and serious. Shane Black would have done fucking wonders for this movie.

C'mon, even when this came out, it had to be ridiculously cliched. It just had to.

I loved the first Die Hard.

So sue me. I love Bruce Willis.

...sometimes.

I saw that in theatre with my parents when it came out, and then many times afterwards on TV. And I loved it.

I especially loved mocking it.

The thing that made the first Die Hard was Rickman. He was new to American cinema at the time. Plus it was the first in a long string of dumb action movies with a really intelligent and swave villian.

No Taylor Negron.
That's what it needed.

Really, what did you expect? I mean c'mon, Brian Freaking Cornelius liked it.

Y'know, that is *exactly* what I kept thinking the entire time.

Hey, most everyone does. One guy on imdb.com calls it perfection.

As it is with DePalma's SCARFACE, I am in the weirdo minority...

Yeah, I was wondering how much this movie was the "first" of its kind in that respect, and I can respect that to a level. It's funny how some things that can inspire a long line of imitators can still hold up on their own even decades later, but even with that in mind, DIE HARD didn't, for me.

And while I loved Rickman being being Rickman, every time he said something about "You Americans, always playing the cowboy..." or when he did that quote about Alexander the Great weeping, I just groaned. I couldn't get my mind past it. At least he didn't quote Shakespeare.

Hef...it's an action movie. Of course it's going to be hackneyed and cliche. You're supposed to just watch and enjoy as Willis beats up and kills people. Look at Predator, you don't watch that for it's high caliber acting or gripping story. You watch it cause dudes get skinned and then hung upside down and to see The Terminator and Apollo Creed battle an invisible alien villain.

Hey, don't talk down to me, boyo. Even action movies can have quality and freshness.

And hey, PREDATOR was miles above and beyond this movie in terms of story and characters! As were both TERMINATOR movies!

Actually I kind of like Die Hard. Strangely enough I saw it last night for the first time in quite a very long time (not counting snippets i've seen on television).

While it is not nearly as cool as it was when i was 13 it still has a place in my heart. Kind of like the Wizard of Oz for other people. It's not as magical as it was when I was younger but it still brings back nostalgia.

Wow, i'm really fucked up.

I thought I was talkin down to action movies. At least that's what I was going for, sorry if it came off as patronizing. Twas not the intent. I am glad that you enjoyed Predator though, I had this fear that you were either going to say you didn't see it or thought 2 was better (which while scary is not that farfetched I know a person who thought Ghostbusters 2 was the better movie...I know!).

Yeah, sorry, tone and context gets lost in the midst of LJ and IM.

Yeah, no way in hell Ghostbusters 2 is the better movie (nor especially is Predator 2 better than 1), but GB2 is still very underrated. It's a strange, kinda fucked-up film.

I loved it too.
Still do. Something about the grim determination of a cop with problems and Eurotrash thieves pretending to be terrorists.

Yippee KI- YAY, Motherfucker.

Yeah. Glass in feet, cheesy accents, late 80's Zaibatsu Christmas party turned clusterfuck, the ultra-violence, my beloved Ludwig Van and Frankie all in the same film??

This was the kind of film to make my generation squee.

But we called it, "Dude that was fuckin' awesome!" then.

"Really, what did you expect? I mean c'mon, Brian Freaking Cornelius liked it."

I think I'm being sorely misrepresented - to say "liked" suggests that I liked it at one time, and no longer do. And not only do I still like it to this day, but I fucking love it. Would I even go so far as to say it's one of the greatest action movies to date? Proudly.

And for future reference, Kev, I prefer to be known as "Brian FUCKING Cornelius", but I mean, hey...I'll take what I can get.
