Hefner Alive!
Sep. 8th, 2006 04:12 amSo in my first real effort to try out a Hefner Monologue on stage, I think I'll gonna perform at Speakeasy, DC's *only* open mic for storytellers. At least, it's the only one I can find. Everything else is for stand-up comedians, which really isn't what the Hefner Monologues are about.
I resisted Speakeasy for awhile for two reasons. First, there's a strict 7-minute time limit, which can be problematic for anyone who's ever read even one of my stories. And second, there's a strict rule of incorporating the night's specific "theme" into your stories. I suppose if I want anything more free, I'd better just do my own one-man-show. I can look at this as a positive thing, forcing me to explore and write in ways I might not have done on my own. But still, kinda bugs me.
Tuesday's theme: "INTOXICATION: Stories About Being Swept Away." Since the Tammy story is too long by a couple hours, I'm thinking about my "Drunk in Bath, England" story, with maybe a smattering of Captain Buzzkill.
The Drunk story is, ironically (or whatever the word is, Robot Devil), one of the more "stand-up comedian" type stories in my repertoire. Go figure.

Date: 2006-09-08 08:52 pm (UTC)If you do this show....YOU MUST TAPE IT. You MUST get someone to film it so I can see the Hefster goodness! Because I can't fly out to DC to see you do it, due to, y'know, WORK.

Also, Greg Land destroys childhoods. I'm just puttin' that message out there a lot this week, even though you already know.

Date: 2006-09-10 05:20 pm (UTC)I had one of the same problems in college, that of not realizing the let's-pick-on-each-other sense of humor of my friends back home was not suited to my new friends in college. The problem with "Do unto others..." is it presupposes other people have the same sensitivities you do, but while I couldn't care less if someone makes fun of me (as long as it's funny) I've learned other people do not share this trait. D'oh!

Date: 2006-09-10 05:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, I really have gotta update that story and all the other Hefner Monologues I've posted here. I've spent the last week revising the book, sprucing up all the stories.
And yeah, that "do unto others" thing you're talking about, that's a great way to put it. These days around non-friends I usually am polite and keep my big trap shut, and am therefore rather uncomfortable around norms.
