thehefner: (We Don't Need... Rhodes)
[personal profile] thehefner
A professor at Georgetown University came into the shop looking for comics that really pushed the envelope on what the form could do, whether artistically, sexually, or politically. After about a half hour, he bought a whole stack of my recommendations and then invited me to lecture at his class. So I'm now wondering if I feel up for lecturing at Georgetown University.

At California Tortilla last night, a little girl from the next table over flung a still-wrapped brownie at me, bashing my nachos in a direct hit. Her mother went pale, apologizing to me and yelling at the girl in the same second, while the father jocularly asked if he'd like to buy me more nachos. I thanked him and declined, since I'd only lost about five chips and managed to salvage the rest.

They left and as I picked up the brownie, the manager came over and, shocked, asked what happened. I told him, and he said, "Hey, you get a brownie!" to which I immediately replied, "That's what *I'm* saying!"

I just ate it now. It was a good brownie.

So the trailer for the DAY OF THE DEAD remake is out. (Annnd now the link is down)

I'm gratified to know since it's so obviously terrible that I really don't have to waste too much time bitching about it, but I'll do some complaining anyway.

First of all, it has absolutely nothing to do with the original DAY, nor even the remake of DAWN. Except Ving Rhames is in it, and Ving's character is totally different from his DAWN character. In fact, the character name of Capt. Rhodes is the only connection to DAY. Ving, I love you. But you weren't any match for the badassness of Ken Foree, and now you're playing Rhodes? Captain "I'M RUNNING THIS MONKEY FARM NOW, FRANKENSTEIN!" Rhodes, the King Dick of Horror Movie Dicks? I have met Joe Pilato, and Mr. Rhames, you are no Joe Pilato.

Also, it's directed by Steve Miner, director of FRIDAY THE 13TH, parts 2 and 3, and LAKE PLACID (ok, that's a cheap shot... I like that movie, but mainly because of the David E. Kelly script and the actors). Come on, people. Geez.

And finally, no Bub. But then again, maybe I don't want my precious Bub anywhere near this tripe.

Good god, that's an actual scene directly out of Queer as Folk, season 2. I hope he's cute, 'cause Hal Sparks ended up sleeping with the guy.

Hmm, I went to the source aintitcool article (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30482) and it looks like the link is down.

I'm sure a better version will pop online sooner or later, either on apple or an official site. But the trailer I saw just an hour or so ago looked like something you'd see for a Sci Fi Channel official movie like MANSQUITO.

Dude, having lectured at a major university will be something kind of cool to put on your grad school applications...

Do it! It's not even like you'll have to put much work it. You know this shit really well and have a passion for it. It'll probably be easy and fun, and how often is anything both of those things?

I will not see a movie where Nick Cannon plays an action hero.

The trailer is back up here http://www.nuimage.net/film_library_detail.asp?fid={AEDDC72E-44BE-40DB-B9E9-E17CF94B08FA}

Reload the page until it loads, it works.

addendum:

University lecture about the merits of comic books as legitimate literature?! Holy crap. It only took a few decades after being considered godless, mind corrupting communistic material. Thank God we have video games to take the heat for that now.

i know i'll see it. i may as well not get indignant about how badly they butcher it, because i will see it and i know it.

i will say this.. if they HAD used Bub.. just think of Ron Perlman. the only person i can think of who would make a great Bub (other than Bub).

Y'know, I seriously do wish you wouldn't give it one penny. This is one of those cases where I seriously advocate bootlegs or waiting till it comes out to rent. It's the principle of the thing, y'know? I bet I could offer up dozens of better movies to watch or better things to do.

And yes, Perlman would have been brilliant. Y'know, if the remake actually did do things like that, taking the strengths of the original movie and trying to up them, I'd be interested.

Ach, alas, I totally would, but she comes in around 11 at Dulles tomorrow night. Funnily, she almost went to go see them in Chicago last week, but didn't for whatever reason.

I'm also thinking about seeing Night of the Living Dead at DCAC if I rush from work.

we have to be up early the next morning, both are working that day 9am until 8:30, and will have been at the Dolls show late the night before.

we will try, but its going to be tough. the main reason we arent scrapping the party to go sleep is so we can meet bloo.
