best... list... ever!
Dec. 29th, 2006 12:56 amGIP, because how often will I get to use this wonderful icon (the reference to which about three of you will get)?
A while ago, I was talking about some movie or other, as I am wont to do, and proclaiming it to be either the "best (something) ever!" or "my favorite (something) of all time!" and one of my friends said, "You know, Heffie, I've learned to discount it whenever you say that. Which miffed me at the time. I take my tastes very personally, and it means a lot to me to talk about and pimp said tastes in the hope that others can feel the joy it has given me. Still, it made me think... as a geek, do I tend to exaggerate the importance of things? Do I needlessly fling hyperbole around like, well, the Comic Book Guy?
Then one day I was playing host to a couple of cousins staying with us for the weekend. I was giving them a wide selection of DVDs to enjoy from my collection, and at once point, they said, "You say everything is the favorite something ever!" And I realized... no. When I say something is my favorite, I mean it. I just have different *subsections.*
So I've decided to start working on a master list of my favorite (somethings) of all time. The list currently includes favorite all time movies, thrillers, noir, comedies, romantic comedies/dramas, dramas, sci-fi/fantasy, horror, zombie movies, vampire movies, comic/graphic novel adaptations, superhero movies, westerns, Shakespeare, 80's-Kids-In-Peril-Comedy-Horror, musicals, cult/unidentifiable, movie casts, movie fight scenes, movie performances, graphic novels, single comic issues, comic creator runs, comic series, songs, albums, bands, singers, movie soundtracks, TV shows, single episodes, music videos, and actors whose mere presence improves a movie by one whole letter grade.
The list gets bigger and bigger every day. I'm not sure why I'm doing this... maybe to post it in my LJ profile for posterity and to inspire others, maybe just to get it all sorted in my head. But it's now underway and shall be for some times as I compile, contemplate, and sort out my favorite things ever. Because one of the biggest things about me is my passion, my geekery, for such things.
I'd love to incorporate it in a Hefner Monologue, presumably the one that will include working at the comic shop, but would it be too "High Fidelity"? Shit, I'd better actually read the book all the way through.
