FANTASTIC FOUR 2

-- Well, now thanks to aintitcool.com (from an anonymous spy; the door's still open for this being discredited... I hope) we finally know what the Laurence-Fishburne-voiced Galactus is going to look like. Swarm of space bugs? Or some variation on the goddamn Jack fucking Kirby version, as God intends it? Word was that the makes of the film were going for the bugs stuff, but then started saying how they had a plan that would "please most." Sounded like they were finally on the right track.

Too bad no one took into account the fact that the film's being produced by Tom "There won't be any Sentinels in X3; there won't be any giant robots in any movie my studio makes" Rothman.

Galactus, devourer of worlds, the cosmic reaper, the image of GOD in the Marvel Universe... will be a storm cloud.

...

Man, this isn't so much as geek-ragingly stupid or wrong (space bugs had me on the geek rampage) as much as it is just... lame.

*fingers crossed that the AICN source was off*

GREEN ARROW MOVIE!

-- Well, sorta.

Actually, I think this is kinda interesting. David Goyer is bouncing back from his rightful place at the FLASH movie (actually, I have no great love of Goyer, but the NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM director doing FLASH instead? I'll take the BATMAN BEGINS/BLADE movies guy any day!) by tackling the most complex character in the DC Universe, the lovable hypocrite bastard loudmouth angry liberal/anarchist/commie (depends on who you ask and/or who's writing) archer badass Oliver Queen, Green Arrow.

Really, try to name me a more complex character in DC superherodom. I'm honestly curious if there is anyone else.

Except that there won't be a GREEN ARROW movie. "Huh?" I hear you ask?

The film would be called SUPER MAX, and it would open with Green Arrow being wrongly convicted and sent to a superhuman prison filled with the kinds of bad guys that he once put away. Stripped of his costume, trick arrows and even his goatee (I thought the Constitution banned cruel and unusual punishment! Those fuckers!), Ollie Queen is sentenced to life and must team up with some of the villains he’s captured so he can escape and clear his name.

“We’ve populated the prison with all sorts of B and C villains from the DC Universe,” says Goyer. “For the fans, there will be all sorts of characters the hardcore comic book junkies will know, but they’re all going to be there under their human names and no one is wearing a costume, but there will be a lot of characters with powers and things like that.”

My first reaction was to recoil with geek indignation. But then I thought about this for a minute or two and, y'know... this might actually work. Like, really well.

Because honestly, the superhero origin movie was already played out when DAREDEVIL came out (I will still champion and treasure the flawed greatness of the Director's Cut, which I think is easily as good as the first SPIDER-MAN or X-MEN). And a Green Arrow origin...? Well, the greatness of the character isn't in the origin, that's for certain, and it's definitely not in his costume nor superheroic abilities.

This could be a great new place to take superhero movies. Just plunk the character right in the middle of a situation, just as it is in the comics. It doesn't even have to be an established character, but the fact that they're gonna use DC characters, and especially Ollie? That pleases me. And it certainly lends itself to the possibility of a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie, which WB is already working on (the script has been commissioned; no word on who's gonna be in it, but there has been talk of getting Brandon Routh as Superman, since SUPERMAN 2 ain't gonna happen, at least not for now).

Still. No goatee. Not happy about that. The fuckers.

You're right about his greatness not being in his origin or his superheroing style. It's in the goatee! What are they doing?! It'll work great, but only with the goatee!

Maybe that'll be what really pisses him off. Batman has "MY PARENTS ARE DEAD!!!" as his mission of vengeance. Punisher has "My whole family is dead. I carried my daughter's brains around in my pocket for the next week to remind me of my mission." Now Green Arrow has "Those fuckers shaved off my goatee." Imagine the sweet vengeance he will exact when he confronts the evil guard with an electric razor arrow!

No Arrow-cave? Or Arrow-mobile? Thank god.

Does this mean Dinah's gonna get a cameo?

Still disappointed by the Galactus news though.

Yeah, I've pretty much given up on there being a *good* Fantastic Four movie, ever. Hell, these aren't much better than the el-cheapo-lame original movie (of which I have a copy). At least that one had the characters' personalities right. (Though Doom went kinda nuts at the end, seemed a little out of character, but for the most part the old movie stuck to the origins much better.)

I am with you on Daredevil bud. Both versions are good movies but IMO the Directors Cut is a more complete movie. Then again I am such an Affleck fan due to his involvement with Kevin Smith so I am biased!!
I like the idea of Super Max..not so sure why they are doing away with the goatee...it doesnt make sense really!
I shall await the movie though and hope its a serious peice and not a stupid fest with humour and "arent we all silly to wear tights" vibe.
Just heard from Film Ick that Larry F will voice the Surfer NOT Galactus. The studio heads aint even sure if Galactus will even speak. At this late stage this is not a good sign. Here is the link for ya

Not sure if a Justice League movie would work. The TVM from a few years back was awful and even getting in Routh will not excite me. They would have to get in Bale as Batman before I would even think about going.

Aye, I just read about the Surfer thing. Poor Doug Jones; he's really wanted to actually voice one of his characters (not counting that he voices Abe in the HELLBOY animated films).

As for a JL movie, it's a long, long way off, so I don't feel like wasting geek energy grumbling over how they might cock that one up till it becomes a bit more of a reality. I will say, though, I think Green Lantern, any Green Lantern (but fingers crossed for Hal), needs his own movie or movies, rather than be introduced as a character in an ensemble story.
