thehefner: (The Hefner Monologues Sign)

THE GOOD NEWS: I got out of Jury Duty and will be able to go see OTHER PLANS tonight, as well as work tomorrow without screwing up my manager's life! Huzzah!

THE BAD NEWS: From the high-class literary agency: "Dear John, Thank you for the opportunity to consider THE HEFNER MONOLOGUES. While you certainly bring an interesting angle to your humorous story, I'm sorry to say that it did not garner the unanimous support we require when taking on a new client. Unfortunately, we are forced to be particularly cautious about representing memoirs given the intense competition in today's marketplace, and there were concerns that this project was similar to others in its genre."

... eh, the first of several, I'm sure. What was it I had to keep reminding myself? I'm not cut out for mainstream common success (although if anything I do is, it'd be THE HEFNER MONOLOGUES). I'm not fit for public consumption.

But there's absolutely a cult fan base waiting for me, a niche just waiting to be carved, wherein I can find a comfortable life as a working writer/performer. They're out there, and some of you are even reading my LJ.

Am I disappointed? Of course. Surprised? Heck no. Once I got it, I instantly started scanning for the "unfortunately." But whatever. I know I have something great here, and with the show gaining momentum, the book is going to follow suit.

Now I just need to find new agents and publishers to whom I can submit. I don't frankly know how the heck to go about this, so any direction in this matter would be appreciated.

... still, who do they think I'm too similar to? That's the part I'm kinda curious about. The only one I hear is Sedaris, and really, we're only similar on the surface anyway. But perhaps that's all they care about?

AND FINALLY, GOOD NEWS THAT I REALLY SHOULDN'T KNOW ABOUT IN THE FIRST PLACE, SO I DON'T WANT TO BE TOO HAPPY ABOUT IT, EVEN THOUGH I AM:

THE HEFNER MONOLOGUES got a favorable mention in the Washington Post last Sunday.

I didn't want to read it or even know about it, but you know how mothers are. YOU try telling her not to give her son the good news.
