rant ahoy.
Aug. 24th, 2007 11:37 amHoly crap.
Internet-only "red band" trailer for the Coen's NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.
Oh man. Oh man. Oh man.
Time for a conflicted rant.
I ask again, has anyone else read NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN by Cormac McCarthy?
I ask this again because, you see, I really, really want to like this movie. I want to be excited as fuck over this kickass trailer. I want this to be better than FARGO, and on par with my very favorite Coen movie, BLOOD SIMPLE (yes, I think it's better than O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? and THE BIG LEBOWSKI, but only a handful of y'all have seen it).
And five-sixths of the way through Cormac McCarthy's novel NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, I was fucking loving every page. And then the last sixth happened. And I am still filled with so much frustration and hatred that it has tainted my feelings for the whole book, as well as this extremely promising trailer.
For God's sake, people, SOMEONE TELL ME YOU'VE READ THIS BOOK. Help me understand why it had to end that way. Help make it acceptable for me! The message boards on imdb ain't helping, it just sounds like a bunch of literary wankery and pretension! I fucking hate literary wankery and pretension. I can much sooner accept cinematic wankery and pretension, or theatrical wankery and pretension, but literary wankery and pretension is where I CROSS THE LINE, DAMN IT.
Like THE HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG? Fucking ending! Broke my goddamn heart, it was such a piece of shit, because everything up until the last sixth of that story was heartbreakingly beautiful in its tragedy. And then WHAT happens? Wankery and pretension, as if to say, "look, we're all 'art-house', ooo!"
Seriously! Look at that trailer up there! It's so awesome, I keep hoping that either the Coen's change the fucking ending or find some way to make it work. For me, I mean. It clearly seems to work for the large number of Cormac McCarthy's arse-lickers.
Has ANYONE? READ? THE FRICKIN' BOOK? HELP ME NOT HATE THIS OTHERWISE AWESOME STORY, SO I CAN BE CRAZY EXCITED OVER THIS TRAILER LIKE I WANNA BE!!!

Sound profound or just seep deep into the mind of your audience with the revolutionary philosophy "Uh, sometimes people and life, like, let you down and stuff."
Remember: If it worked for writers who watched their friend's eyeballs melt out in the gas attacks of World War I or starved through the Depression, it must work for you and your life of agents, publication deals, and Starbucks blueberry frappuccinos.
