SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET trailer.

Gay-For-Musicals as I am, I've never seen the show before. Unless there's an exceptional version playing somewhere in the area, should I watch the George Hearn/Angela Lansbury version first? Or maybe the George Hearn/Patti LuPone version? Or just go into the with no expectations?

I'm amused at how the studios are really frickin' nervous over SWEENEY TODD, between the fact that it's a musical and that it has family friendly Captain Jack killing people and baking them into pies.

Me, I just hope it's a return to form for Tim Burton. I mean, I know CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY worked for many of you, but it sure as hell didn't for me. And if it's not SWEENEY, then it might well be his next rumored project... a full-length stop-motion version of FRANKENWEENIE.

While we're at it, I strongly look forward to new great Danny Elfman film score music. It's been too long since we've had a brilliant theme of his. (Although I thought his HULK score was fantastic)

So Edd and I just came back from a sneak preview of AMERICAN GANGSTER, the new Ridley Scott film with Denzel and Russell Crowe.

Damn good film.

We have a serious Best Picture contender here. Not saying it's brilliant, and not saying it deserves it, but it's damn good. I give it a solid recommendation. Not much to comment on from here, other than to say it's Scott's best film in years (speaking as one underwhelmed by GLADIATOR). Damn good work all around.

Oh, and did anyone else realize that this is a reunion for the two stars of VIRTUOSITY?? Dude!

Psyched for Sweeney Todd, although I've never seen it either. I just couldn't stop thinking about Edward Scissorhands. Heh.

Oh, Virtuosity. Thanks for reminding me, man. ;-)

I'm looking for anything to be better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at this point.

i like:
musicals
Depp
Bonham-Carter
Rickman

And the trailer does a nice job of teasing. Both the music and where the barber shop is located.

If'n I were going to watch a pre-DeppSweeney, I'd go for the Lansbury, because, c'mon, she's Angela Frickin' Lansbury, and she rocks like a rocking thing. Lupone rocks, too, but...ANGELA.

I highly recommend seeing it onstage if you can.

If not, go for the version you were thinking of.

My roommate and I just cannot shake the image from our minds of Depp's Sweeny being like some horrible lovechild of Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands. It's the hair, perhaps. Or maybe it's the Data-in-All-Good-Things skunk stripe that just looks hilarious on Depp.

*anxiously awaits the release*

That's exactly why I put the shout-out there. I'm still not quite certain why you're so adamant about it; I'd rather see the filmed stage production (not a movie, it's the stage version) of a legendary cast than risk a local production (or an expensive Broadway version starring some flavor-of-the-week teen starlet) that's sub-par.

I just feel that seeing these things live is generally the best experience.

Of course, if it's a lame production, then that's not good.

Angela Lansbury. Obviously.

Well, I also would be curious to know which George Hearn is better.

Seriously, sometimes these guys age like fine wine. Others like milk.

My very super favorite musical of all time is CHESS, which I've never seen, nor do I think any live version can live up to the one I have in my mind whenever I listen to the original concept album. Tommy Korberg has been playing the Russian lead in CHESS since its very beginning, and still performs it every now and again in Sweden and Denmark, and he's actually only gotten better.

CHESS. What's not to love about a musical loosely based on the match between Victor Korchnoi and Bobby Fischer? Also starring Anthony Head's brother!

My god, it's like Harry Potter crashed into Pirates of the Carribean! I'm not even sure if I spelled that right, probably didn't. Oh well.

I didn't get a chance to see who the project was being produced by, if it's Disney I'm going to cry. xD

Didn't mean Disney, it's most likely Warner Bros. isn't it? Since it's so dark and shit.

And now I feel like an idiot because it says blatantly on the front of the preview DREAMWORKS/WARNER BROS.

*smacks head* It's been a loooooooooong day.

Aye, it's WB. But they're still nervous at having Johnny Depp killing people. And in a musical, ewwww! Which opens around Christmas!
