The awesome [livejournal.com profile] batcookies has posted scans of my very favorite Spider-Man story, "Kraven's Last Hunt." Here's Part 1 and Part 2.

It's not the complete story, but rather a skimmed over version, as you (rightly) cannot post more than half of a full story on [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily. But for those who are interested but want to save money on the expensive and out-of-print collection, by all means, read those two parts.

I'm not certain if it's fair to call it my favorite Spider-Man story. After all, it's decidedly darker and more screwed-up and than your average Spidey tale, a product of the "grim 'n gritty" era of comics. It's by no means true to the general heart of Spider-Man stories, but maybe that's not really true either. Really, at the end of the day, it's not Spider-Man's story, it's Kraven's. And poor Peter is sucked along for the ride.

Regardless, if Sam Raimi (or whoever takes over the movies) had balls, THIS would be SPIDER-MAN 4. I mean, at this point, it's either this or the Clone Saga.

Things I Will Do When I'm A Professional Comic Writer #47: do for Doctor Octopus what James Robinson did for The Shade in STARMAN.

But is a movie about Kraven what Spider-fans want to see? (Other than you, obviously.) Because that's what this would be.

They'll watch what I TELL them to watch! And they'll like it!

Kraven's Last Hunt was put into trade paperback. It may be hard to find (I got a copy so how hard could it be?), but there's always amazon or ebay.

Is Clone Saga really one of the stories he plans on using? That's wrong especially since he did such a half assed job with Venom a story that could've been awesome had he handled it properly...Anywhoo, a Kraven movie could work, maybe not a direct adaptation of Last Hunt but a movie heavily based on that with a bit more focus on spidey. Either that or set up the Lizard. Either way they need to go back to a one villain per movie format.

Not good enough! It deserves to be in print now now now! It was put out in trade, like, ten years ago. The only new edition we've seen is an expensive special edition hardcover joint.

Hey, Bendis actually made the Clone Saga not-sucky in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN. And I could easily see studios going, "MORE SPIDER-MEN! MORE TOBEY! KIDS'LL EAT IT UP!"

Yeah, you could do "Kraven's Last Hunt" but combine it with the Lizard, using him instead of Vermin. Perfect!

You're probably right about the Clone Saga from the studio's POV. My roommate and I joked that if Tobey didn't return they could cast Jake Gyllenhaal as his replacement and on the off chance Tobey did return later they could say that Jake was Ben Reilly and thus begin the Clone movie.

Regarding Lizard in the Kraven movie, I totally didn't mean it that way. I just suggested him as an alternate villain since Dr. Connors has been established already but holy hell! Using him as a Vermin substitute... that freakin works

I know you didn't mean it that way, but that's how it occured to me we could make the movie work. Just pump up Peter and Mary Jane in the story, and... you have a pretty damn great SPIDER-MAN 4 here.

Ah ok, I misread that you misread what I wrote creating a misread of a misread that didn't exist....yep, that's it exactly.

Let's just hope whoever they hire to write 4 comes up with an idea along this line cause I agree it could be quite stellar.

Actually, I've heard rumors that Spider-Man 4 might be Mysterio, with Bruce Campbell as the villain in question - having already cameo'd in various roles in the first three movies. The idea being, he was already Mysterio the whole time!

I dunno, I like that schtick. I love Kraven's Last Hunt, but after Spidey 3 I think we need something a tad lighter.

Re: Doctor Octopus - I still can't believe that they had such a brilliant status quo set up between him and Peter after he cured Peter's poisoning, and then KILLED HIM OFF JUST TO MAKE KAINE LOOK COOL. I mean, what? Talk about wasted potential.

I dunno if that'd actually happen, but Bruce deserves it. Fingers crossed.

Otto got fridged. Well, okay, not really, but kinda sorta, in that lazy writer's trick of "we'll do this to show how badass this new character is!"
