When angst strikes (in this case, as is so often the case, when everybody else is asleep or otherwise away from the computer) it's always good to have distractions. Such as:

The season premiere of ROBOT CHICKEN. The fact that it features both Joss Whedon and Tila Tequila and that I love them both in it is a testament either to the show's skill or my desperation at this moment. Let's go with "skill!"

The new FRIDAY THE 13TH trailer. Also, the new poster. One one hand, Jason's neck looks way too thick. On the other hand, I don't care holy crap that is badass. Jason looks equally prepared to slaughter campers or Uruk-Hai, it doesn't matter, he'll take them on. Oh Jason Voorhees, you're an undead Mama's Boy and your movies almost all suck (except for Parts 4, 6, and X for pure crack factor), why do I love you so?

And finally, in "why John Hefner is going to Hell this week," I cannot wait for the latest installments in CHUD.com's list of the greatest child deaths in film. I knew the folks at Troma were messed up, but the last three minutes of BEWARE! CHILDREN AT PLAY takes the cake. Good lord, Lloyd Kaufman. Good lord. What kinds of lives do those child actors have now, I wonder? Me, though, I'm always going to favor the ice cream girl in ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13TH.

Oh god, wait, the kid from THE BLOB... great, now I'm definitely not getting to sleep tonight. If the angst doesn't get me, the Blob will. Or maybe Jason. Or Joss Whedon! Augh, this was a terrible plan!

While I do look forward to the new Friday the 13th, I'm not completely convinced yet that it won't suck.

Considering that they almost all suck, I think that's besides the point. The point is, will there be good Jason kills?

See, yeah, that's what happens when you watch it with wine and beer in you in the first place. Cue icon.

I'm actually kind of excited about the new F13.

The franchise, as a whole, really lost its track after the second one. And the whole mess that was Freddy vs. Jason didn't do anything good (from a mythos standpoint) for either franchise.

It looks, from the trailer and a few other things I've read over the past months, that this one gets back to the root of things. Which, considering it's a reboot of the franchise as a whole, is a very good thing.

This, of course, reminds me that I still have to get around to writing the series of essays on the big three slashers of the 70s/80s (Freddy, Jason, Michael Meyers) and how each one exemplifies certain societal fears and natural control mechanisms.

Yeah... I probably think too much about this stuff... ;)

You think so about F13? I dunno, man, the first two aren't really all that. So you're saying it went downhill once he actually got the hockey mask?

Personally, I think part 4 is about as great as the series ever got: Jason at the top of his menace, excellent kills, genuinely creepy, Crispin Glover, etc. If the new one gets back to the root of things, I'd say that root is in Part 4 more than anything else.

I'd totally dig reading those essays when you get around to 'em.

4 Was definitely better than most... and it was getting back to the main idea of what/who Jason was, as laid out in the first couple of films.

It went down hill (story-wise) when they started going overboard with the killings. The thing about Jason (and Freddy) was that they had real reasons that they'd kill. It wasn't indiscriminate. They played by certain rules.

For the F13 series, the ones that broke those rules the most (as far as I can currently remember--been a while since I've watched the whole series) were Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason X.

But, yeah... I've got to write those things...

Yeah, agreed. Although I give JASON X a pass because it's genuinely entertaining. I mean, the holodeck sequence alone...

The Big Three are fascinating. I don't like Freddy (or rather, he's a villain you love to hate rather than one you root for; the dude's a fucking child killer, for god's sake! Seeing him get pwned is always awesome) and I have zero interest in Michael Myers. I find him blank, and have come to theorize that the real secret weapon to making Michael Myers scary is Dr. Loomis there being his Ahab.

But Jason's always appealed to me for some reason. Maybe it's because he's got the unrelenting badass nature of Yul Brenner's Gunslinger, of the Terminator and Anton Chigurh, all of whom have a personality (even the robots!).
