Man, I'm so glad we wimped out and stayed home with blankets and beer. That was good. Even with--as [livejournal.com profile] tazira put it--Elizabeth Alexander being "full of epic poetry fail*," and Chris Matthews and Olbermann being pompous and insufferable,** I am truly moved today.

Take it away, Even Ste/v/ph/ens:

*As Edd put it, her cadence is a prime reason why so many people unfortunately hate poetry. She was an accent away for doing a Christopher Walken impression. Thank god for tiny elderly black ministers saving the day.

**Edd turned down my suggestion to watch Fox News to see everyone grumble and be bitterly passive-aggressive. Regardless, MSNBC's coverage, like all things in life, needs moar Rachel Maddow. I would be willing to get a sex change if it gave me the chance to be with her. Plus, she's a comic geek! Can I just go back 14 years and get punky Rhodes scholar Rachel to be my spunky lesbian sidekick?

Ha! Yes. In his rejected original draft, he followed it with, "And if you are brown, you won't be flushed down."

HAHAHA that's awesome!! He should have kept that! Durn.

By the way, I'd like to see the 'revised' performance before I go out to help you with clothes. When/where would you want to do that? I can come up to you anytime after next Tues (far as I know).

OH MY GOD, yes. That man was adorable and made me laugh and feel even happier about this whole day (as if that was even possible, today rocked).

Meh, found the whole thing to be, well rather boring and full of political boilerplate. Just like every inauguration I've ever seen. Elizabeth Alexander reminded me of the Robert Frost saying "Writing free verse is like playing tennis with the net down."

Maybe this inauguration has the added benefit of being the first one I've seen while having beer in me and my brother beside me to snark about such things like George Sr's silly-yet-very-warm-looking hat. That undoubtedly helped.

I've loved me some Rachel Maddow since she started out humbly on her first national platform with Air America (which was an awesome startup skullfucked by horrible shit management... I've still not got over the demise of Morning Sedition- some of the best in morning comedy ever heard that even outdid Harry Shearer's Le Show.)

She is pure calm, the kind of liberal I'd like to be.

God, me too! And I love how she can be snarky, but never mean-spirited, which is almost always associated with snark in my experience.
