Don Rosa's masterful graphic novel THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SCROOGE MCDUCK is out of print?!

What. Is. This. FUCKERY.

Just as we'd managed to get it selected for [livejournal.com profile] noscans_daily's burgeoning book club (and some people are STILL understandably hesitant; how the hell could a book about Disney ducks actually be this good? Trust me, it really, really is) I discover that the only way anyone can get it is to pay $80+ for a used copy. I wrote to my boss at Big Planet Comics, and he informed me that Gemstone (the publisher) still owes their printer $373,000 (!!!).

One of the greatest graphic novels I have ever read (no, really), and it's out of print. Any hope I had to analyze this masterful epic with the noscans folks is seemingly on hold indefinitely.

Hell damn crap fart.

On the plus side, after it being taken down for a few months, someone's finally put THE STEPFATHER (featuring an Oscar-worthy performance by Terry "John Locke" O'-Motherfuckin'-Quinn) back on YouTube!

Watch it until it gets yanked, and/or pray that they finally put it out on DVD to coincide with the ill-advised remake starring the guy from NIP/TUCK! The non-Dr. Doom one! Sigh.

I feel the same way about Sam and Max: Surfin' the Highway, which is also looooong out of print and, last I knew, sells for exorbitant prices used.

Redacted: I just looked and there's an 'anniversary' edition out in print, so the used prices have gone down. SCORE. I'm gonna suggest it for reading club (as soon as I get done with all this stuff).

That'd be awesome! Another oddball, off-beat choice! I think it's imperative that the Book Club mix it up like that, which is why I've been fighting so hard for SCROOGE.

I have that book on my wish list. I was hoping the price would drop a bit (for a couple of days the only used listings were priced at $999 but then dropped down to like $20 a short time later) but if it's out of print, that only worsens the odds.

According to this press release made back in October--http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=18620--they were planning to put it back into print by late Spring. Sooooo... we'll see? Hrmm.

If it were just me, I might. I don't need a copy myself, but now I don't think we can do it for the book club, considering the regular scans_daily got shut down due to questions of illegality. Noscans_daily's policy is to be cleaner than clean.

I was just really excited about the prospect of hearing the reactions of a bunch of other people reading and discussing it, especially as it's a comic that most people wouldn't ever think to pick up in a million years.

Also, hey you, been awhile!

There is this companion book still available: http://www.amazon.com/Life-Times-Scrooge-McDuck-Companion/dp/1888472405/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239766735&sr=1-2
So are the books akin to Bone?-adventure, wackiness done in a non-condescending all ages way?

Unfortunately, while the Companion's great, it's just supplemental. Fills in gaps, but it's secondary to the main book, and shouldn't be read first either.

Yeah, actually, BONE is an apt comparison! Those two were the finest (American) all-ages books I could recommend back when I worked at the comic shop!
