Holy hell, am I becoming one of those people who has so much shit going on in their lives that they just don't have time for LJ anymore? FUCK THAT.

I've also just been majorly stressed for Winnipeg. This will be the biggest Fringe yet, where I'll either make some actual money or I'll be totally lost in the shuffle. To make matters worse, I've been increasingly worried about how culture clash, and how certain themes or styles of humor may mean rather less to a Canadian audience. One reason Montreal was so difficult for me was that they don't have the same culture of arms-flailing neurotic introspective angst humor. Unlike, say, New York City, where I got great reviews.

The problem with being a niche performer is that you have to get comfortable with the reality of performing for people who will not get what you're doing, in real time. I'm still trying to get comfortable with that. All that matters is that I find the people who do get it, that I find my audience and work to improve for their tastes in a way that's most fulfilling to myself as an artist.

...

Oh hell, this is getting too angsty. Let's shift gears to outright nerd rage, shall we?

I can only respond to this image with the following gif:

...

...

AUGH.

I could explain context, but it really, really wouldn't help. I need to end this post on a much more positive note, with the original art from BOOK OF FATE # 4 (the misbegotten 90's-tastic idea to turn Dr. Fate into a gritty Lobo style antihero), by a guy named Ron Wagner. I've never seen his art anywhere else, and it's a damn shame. His work is sorta like of Trevor Von Eeden and Klaus Janson had a kid. But more to the point, he draws one of my favorite Harvey Dent images ever:

God, I love it.

I ain't much better, but it's a start.

THAT. THAT RIGHT THERE. THE GOOD SIDE ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE NICKNAMED 'APOLLO'. DAMN IT. I MEAN, DAMN IT.

Damn straight!!! "Apollo," exactly!!!

Really, Harvey needs to be sexy. Like, in this icon too. It makes the scarred face all the more striking, and adds to the creepy allure of his character.

I hate when artists don't actually give Harvey any character. Like, they think all they need to do is just give him a generic-looking good side and a CRAZY evil side, and bam, that's your character right there. Except, no. Hell no.

Except he needs to look like the prettiest pretty sexy pretty boy PRETTIER THAN BRUCE WAYNE.

Because Apollo is the pretty one. Not 'pretty' as in 'androgynous', but what 'pretty boy' used to mean. Before anime showed up.

I'm tempted to question this idea, but since the actual words out of Moroni's mouth when he threw the acid in that very first appearance were, "Okay, pretty boy, I'll fix you!"

I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. :)

Exactly. That kind of 'pretty boy'. I mean, it used to just mean you were... like, John Barrymore, someone like that.

I wish I could offer some insight into the potential culture clash, but it exists from province to province, those of us in southern Ontario (the most important and influential part of Canada, obviously!) tend to share as much (or more) in common with Americans than we do the rest of Canada. People from the prairie provinces and (especially) Québécois are a bit of a mystery to me in some ways.

As for Tony Daniel on Batman...there isn't enough 'DO. NOT. WANT.' in the world.

Yeah, the insights I gained through Montreal will not necessarily hold true for Winnipeg nor Vancouver. I've just gotta dive in and find out for myself! Hopefully, at the very least, they will be a more responsive audience, rather than quietly sitting and studying my show with the occasional chuckle.

Here's a thought- make references to silly American angsty-ness. Make them laugh at how emo we are. You'd be like a conduit... no, an AMBASSADOR of FEEEEEEELINGS! (whoahwhoahwhoah)

If the problems persist through Winnipeg and/or Vancouver, that could certainly be worth considering...

I saw "Defending the Caveman" this past weekend, and thought of you. They weren't the jokes or stories you would tell, but it was the kind of storytelling I could see you doing.

Exactly. You see, there IS an audience for this sort of thing.
