Winnipeg, two days in
Jul. 17th, 2009 10:43 amFavorite feature of Mother Box? Hands-down, the voice memos app. I've been dictating ideas daily, and I'm able to label them for future reference and everything! Totally awesome. I may try to do a whole podcast with this bad gal one of these days!
Getting better at typing with Mother Box, but man, between that and the small screen AND my fleeting free time, I haven't caught up on anybody's LJ since Saturday, and I don't know when that'll change. I may have to just wait till I get back and devote an entire day to catch-up!
Winnipeg is definitely shaping up to be one of the most interesting Fringe experiences I've yet... um... experienced. It's a mad carnival here, and I'm up with more shows than I've ever seen. At the same time, Winnipeggers are hardcore, and will be seeing about thirty to fifty shows each in the next ten days. My audiences have been small but larger than expected for weekday early evening shows, plus their energy and enthusiasm definitely beats out Montreal's contemplative statues of audience members.
A Winnipeg critic saw my Montreal show and posted a review yesterday. It was an okay review, three stars, which I understand is the minimum to catch Winnipeggers' attentions, so between that and the word of mouth I've been generating, I have hopes for a decent weekend turnout. Plus, I've found it often works in my favor when audiences underestimate me going in. I sneak up on them that way.
Still, the review sticks in my craw a bit. He saw a tough performance with a less than ideal audience, and like the other Montreal critic, he pretty much said that I'm riding my cousin's coattails with my title. I'd understand someone thinking that if they hadn't seen the show yet, but jeez. I have to wonder how much of the show he really watched, y'know? I'd like to ask him what else I could possibly name a show about coming to terms with my own name that *wouldn't* have "Hefner" in there.
But of course, I remind myself that this is a niche show, and not everyone--musty ol' critics included--will dig what I have to offer. And so far, audiences have largely been getting it and liking it, so I'm feeling pretty good so far. Particularly as some of those audience members include...
Well, let me put it to you this way: I think I may have discovered the Castle Anthrax. Who knew it might have been cunningly disguised as an RV from Portland?
