Back to general nerdiness.

First, I should mention that I finally watched TRON last Friday for the express purpose of being able to watch the much-hyped trailer for TRON LEGACY, and holy sweet bejabbers, you folks weren't kidding. That is one sweet trailer. And maybe it's just me, but man, Bridges' delivery of "Not anymore" is downright goosebumps-inducing.

It actually made me like the film more than the film itself did, just to see Jeff Bridges' character seeming to take a bit of Obie Stane* to heart there. I hear tell that Flynn's apparently been in gameworld so long that he's gone full-on Col. Kurtz. Awesome. Between that and the prospect of more Boxleitner and that's one ticket fucking bought.

Man, Jeff Bridges is one of those actors who possesses the most double-edged kind of brilliance. He's so good that no one notices. He's just so natural, not showy at all. He deserves way more praise than he gets.

Now, for the main reason I called you all here today.

[livejournal.com profile] american_arcane posted this latest bit of utter and complete amazing awesomeness on his Facebook. To quote Ren Hoek: "I'M. SO. HAPPY!"

Laz Alonso as Doc
Alexis Bledel as Lady Jaye
Billy Crudup as Zartan
Zach Galifiankais as Snow Job
Tony Hale as Dr. Mindbender
Vinnie Jones as Destro
Joey Kern as Tomax
Joey Kern as Xamot
Chuck Liddell as Gung Ho
Julianne Moore as Scarlett
Henry Rollins as Duke
Alan Tudyk as Shipwreck
Olivia Wilde as The Baroness
and
Sgt. Slaughter as Himself

I've always had a strange love for G.I. JOE, just because of the characters. How they all had such rich backstories and personalities. I adore them all, no matter what form they come in, be it the cheesy show, the legitimately far-better-than-you'd-ever-expect Marvel Comics by Larry Hama, epically brain-breaking three-part Fringe musicals, god I'm STILL recovering from COBRA: THE MUSICAL, PART III... heck, I'm seriously tempted to see the film, which is either awful or awesomely stupid, depending on who you ask.

Hell, I almost can't even consider it a parody. Of course Cobra Commander loves 70's boogie and would force Three Dog Night to reunite. The guy was a used car salesman, for god's sake! Seriously! It's canon and everything!

EDIT OF JUSTICE:

Now I can truly go to bed happy and fulfilled until the crushing disappointment that always sinks in not long after waking in the morning. Yay!!!

*I wish I could remember who it was that noted how Stane in IRON MAN was just the nicest Marvel villain ever. "Tony! How're you doing, buddy? Hey, I have pizza! YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY! Nah, I'm just kiddin'! Hey, lookit me, I got a Segway, wheeeeeeee! Hey, is that your heart? Mind if I FUCKING RIP IT OUT K TNX HAHAHA IS EVIL."

Those were both many levels of awesome! Thanks for sharing.

Go see G.I. Joe. It has it's awesomeness moments, and it's very pretty eye candy. At times, it doesn't know if it's G.I. Joe or Star Wars, and some of the lines are made of cheese, but if you go in with those expectations, very fun movie!

The fact that no one else is responding to the G.I. JOE one, either here or on Facebook, is giving me that old familiar sinking feeling that we're a very, very small minority to enjoy such nerdiness of this level.

You mean the kind of minority that relishes the fact that they actually used the line "and knowing is half the battle" in the film?

As a weird little aside, given both the topic of G.I. Joe and the fact that you're plugging your show as of late, I found this little quote on IMDB in the trivia section of G.I. Joe. It made me giggle...:

"Dennis Quaid describes his character Hawk as "a mixture between Chuck Yeager, Sgt. Rock and a naïve Hugh M. Hefner." "

Oh heck, I'd have been shocked if they didn't use that! No, no, no, the nerd that I am demands far more!

... wow, I'm not sure even he knows what the hell kind of character he's trying to describe. As the one person I know who's seen it, does that at all come through in his performance?

The Chuck Yeager came across....I didn't really feel the Hugh Hefner, though....and the Sgt. Rock thing just confuses me....um, wrong character, there, Dennis.

ahahaha. soo true!! he was such a damn good friend/villain.

I just rewatched Iron Man again last week with a few folks who adore the Big Lebowski but hadn't seen Iron Man. They were really shocked that Jeff Bridges wound up being evil. I wasn't sure why, as he is bald in the movie, after all.

Y'know, it's funny how much I keep hearing people were SHOCKED that Stane turned out to be evil. I mean, c'mon, yeah, bald! Duh! Also, he had a beard. Never a good sign.

Then there are the people who think he went too evil/crazy too quickly. Honestly, I went in knowing he was evil (just evil in a nice way! The pizza!), so it all seemed to fit to me!

Good lord, Deadpool and Hal play off of each other magnificently. I dare say it even beats the Spidey/Batman dynamic. His double take early on and the Picard-esque facepalm are just gold.

It's inspired! But makes sense, really. Hal spent the 70's being Ollie Queen's straight man.

Count me amongst those who thought they would save EVILStane for the second movie. I figured he'd be fighting the Ten Rings guys for the first film. All the nice bits were just knife twists to make the betrayal hurt that much more. But also let Obie stew a bit more and let Bridges really cut loose as an actor when it all came out. Oh well.

As for the GI JOE video, I caught myself thinking over the concept of Snake Eyes painting. Japanese swordsman used to focus on calligraphy with the same focus and dedication as they did swordsmanship. The brush and the sword being one you see. Add that SE is a mix of the skills of a swordsman, a ninja and a special forces solider in a person. That draws similar parallels with the mixing of paints on a canvas make..... ok yeah way too much thought into this

Now that you put it that way, it is rather sad that we couldn't have built up for it just for the express purpose of having more Jeff Bridges, spread out and built up more. Ah well. It didn't bother me in the same way that, say, Aaron Eckhart's Harvey went from 0 to CRAZY instantly, with no build-up whatsoever.

See, that's what I mean! It's weirdly somehow in character! I buy it!

Man, my GI Joe battles I played when I was four would have been so much cooler as a musical!
Maybe the ending to the whole Lantern Color War thing should be Deadpool takes all the rings (backed by his really big gun), keeps ten for himself, and hocks all the others online. Either way, it baffles me a bit that GL and DP are going to be played by the same guy in the movies.

Weirdly, I can totally see Ryan working for both roles. I mean, he's PERFECT for Wade, but I can very much see him as Hal too. He has the cockiness and the swagger of a test pilot. It's just a matter of how much he reigns it in that divides his performances of Hal and Wade.

That said, if Hal did suddenly turn INTO Wade in the film, that would be so wrong but awesomely so. See icon. Now THAT'S how you drive Hal crazy!

Now, you know Olivia Wilde is also in Tron Legacy, snooch! So not only can she look hot in a black leather Baroness outfit... she'll likely rock the blue neon of Tron as well.

As an example of how bad I am a tron fan, I just put Wendy Carlos Solar Sailor theme from the movie and the old coin-op Tron game as my ringtone on my new phone.
